I agree. However 2 specialist have seen the video and they are not convinced it is variator related. Weird.I’ve heard worse, but it does sound a bit variatory.

Who knows then!
Yes, saw tWell everyone standing around my car thought it wasn't variators. There is a classic example on FB at the moment, though.

Mine also 2008 pre fix with the caps done. 4 incidents in 1 year, always in cold temperature. In the couple of years I’ve owned my car I’ve only had 2 cold start ups with the dreaded rattle!!! albeit very slight? Mine is an older engine (2008 pre fix) & with the risk of tempting fate nothing recently? I’ve put 5k miles on it in my ownership all in sport.
that sound wa less that 2 seconds - is that enough to count as variatior work needed? Thanks for replying Phil. Same situation here and I am trying to understand what it is. Got the car to the specialist for 6 weeks but the car never made the noise while there. I see that your post is from 2015 so I assume it has not worsen for you. Is yours similar to this? https://youtube.com/shorts/aXg2N8Ub9B0?feature=share

Notice the blue cam covers and oil filler cap so wet sump engine. Is this even a factor?
