A number of years ago my wife took her car to have a puncture repair, they said it needed replacing and recommended changing the other side as that was not much better and changed them both.
She rang me to tell me and I was suspicious so I told her to get them to put both old tyres in the boot.
They then said the fitter had made a mistake and they refunded her (left the new tyres on), I never did get the old tyres and we have never been back.

Yeah.
My tiny local tyre place swapped the winter tyres onto the QP a few years ago, and told me the summers were used up and in the skip. I asked to see them, and they had loads of wear left. Took them away for the next summer and never went back to that place.
Last weekend I went to my new regular place to put the winters on, and when I went to pick up, they said, "We advise that your rear summers won't be worth keeping; come and have a look and see if you agree." Completely different.

Myles at Emblem keeps every screw and clip for me and it is a great aid when going through what was done to the car (and I assume this is done for every other customer). It is great to have a relationship with a garage where you can also trust their judgement (even if they still do check with you on everything their guidance is appreciated if honest).

Yep... does the same for me (in the past).

Found out he was the same tech who serviced the car when it was relatively new at Meridian Modena.

As you own any removed parts the default should be that you have the right to take them away if you want to. Why you'd want to take away a broken part is another matter, but you get the point.

Yep they always had a box of any bits removed and replaced on my car and were happy to explain why they needed to be replaced.

Agreed, every big job, clutch, gearbox, head gasket, camshaft, head, etc that I have had replaced the garage has had the broken or old part there to demonstrate the failure of item. Those who don't are not worth their salt imo. I can imagine Matt and Ash going through the failure parts and reasons with a fine toothcomb just like Voicey does etc... decent garages will as they have a conscience and loyalty to their customers plus they deliver a five star service!

My wife is likely to need a hip replacement - once this Covid business eases off.
I must remember to ask the surgeon to show us the original before we pay his bill.
lol, only just arrived and causing much mirth already. You'll go far David. Oops, you already have.
You'll go further then! ;)

I think this is a legitimate concern, although I'm sure most garages are pretty honest.
I may be reaching. However, I believe this to be an oxymoron.

In all seriousness Mark, I'm sure that most garages are as bent as a banana.

A very clever chap is about to say. If you want to go looking for crooks. Look in unregulated businesses.

Having been a technician/mechanic for over 40 years I'm honest and have been a professional witness in court against a Main Dealer and was praised by the Judge for my honesty and professionalism.
The problem is the Management especially the ones who aim to get Big bonuses off the backs of others and that's the same in any business.
At Maserati they wanted you to report leaking valve cover gaskets as it's a nice money earner.
Wiper blades too and even after a visit to Dominic Cummings optician you would notice no difference other than the customer will be raped at the cost of the items.
Rant over

I certainly wasn't including you in my remarks. Anyone else on the forum, nor anyone recommended by other forum users Phil. And you're correct of course. Management, sometimes pushed by shareholders, can often be the source of bad practice. According to this BBC report BBC
'Citizens Advice, which runs a national consumer helpline and website, said it was contacted regarding 57,000 cases of issues with used vehicles [in 2019].' 'Problems with second-hand cars regularly top the list of gripes in the Citizens Advice list of shame. Eight in 10 of these complaints were about defective or broken vehicles, while 7% of customers said they had been misled.'

Main stealers are complete crooks imo, always looking for a way to shaft punters when car is in for servicing

I could well believe it Phil - if I was to name and shame the garage in mind it would shock a lot of people on this forum - especially as they have a supposed good rep .
