Forget it Matt , i went to see this car last year and posted the pics on this site , its got axe marks through several of the panels in several places , floors are rusted through as are many of the panels , engine is in bits and its hard to say its all there anyway , keep well clear , i'll dig out the pics if you want

The guy hadn't paid his rent on the storage and i think the landlords took it out on the car, he stripped it 10 years ago , a proper basket case and not worth the trouble

regards loz

Is that really the same car Loz????? I could swear it was in paint last time I saw it.

Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Yeah it is matt , was cream/off white when i saw it , seems someone has started to prep it and given up, in the other pics you can clearly see the old colour white on some of the other panels , thats wher i went to see it in Aylesbury

I thought Aylesbury sounded familiar, well remembered Loz. Sounds like you needed the Kahunas of a mammoth to take this one on.

Keep looking Frank, your ideal one will be out there.

Frank, it tells you in the advert its silver.....Have they pictured the right car...Silver never looked like that.........

Noticed they will only sell if you have a part or full restoration at their garage in the USA....

Just registered on this forum - can't believe I've missed it up to now. I'm registered on the Maserati UK forum with the same username.

I'm wondering if you guys are serious about the forum car. I've been thinking of selling my 1981 Merak SS. It's in extremely good condition; over the last 8 years, it owes me over 50k, almost everything done at Bill McGrath (only thing not done there was the full engine rebuild I had done in 2004-5, which was done at a specialist race engine builder in consultation with BM). I have a list of things from Bill McGrath that would need doing to bring it to 'as new' condition - anyone who has seen such a list from Andy's boys knows how comprehensive it is. For example, the gas bonnet struts and the rear view mirror need replacing but I have not done yet as originals are like hen's teeth. The aircon does not work; I decided not to when I had my first bill for 18.5k and needed to prioritise; never really missed it as I usually drive with the windows down for obvious reasons... It came from S Africa nearly a decade ago, and there has never been a hint of rust - the bodywork/chassis is exceptional, I'm told by the experts.

Just let me know - by the way, it was the car featured in Classic and Sportscar last summer. Some members have seen it in the flesh. It's a very good one.

Worth exploring?

Welcome GTM , yep you have certainly missed something really special over the years , not too worry you have made the most important and sensible decision by registering now , fortunately you have a wealth of knowledge and Masser experiences that we need , so please make as many lengthy posts as you like re the Merak , add as many before and after pics as you like,

In return we promise as much friendly banter in return , with any advice help that you need, Bill Mcgraths a good old traditional indy, now under Andy' s guidance , you couldn't of been in better hands ,

Look forward to further contibutions

warm regards

Thanks for the welcome Loz - think we may have met in April '09 at the Bristol Italian car day, where I took the Merak. My username is gtmerak81 on the other forum, I copied across wrongly.

Not much in the way of before and after pictures - it looks the same as the body was always spot-on. But the mechanicals were pretty much overhauled. I still remember the first inspection report from Bill McGrath's - about 8 pages long, ending out with a phrase etched on my memory: 'while the list may seem daunting, this is a remarkably sound example'. And then I spent 40 grand on it...

Took it out last Sunday for the last time in a few months. I do that when I think about selling it, then promptly change my mind. It's glorious

Hello GTM, yep, you have missed out but glad your a member now, your car looks lovely and it is a crying shame there is very few left in tip top condition, i have always preferred the Bora myself but dont get me wrong, Merak is still lovely. It is a real SS isn't it and not a standard model with a £38 badge on it like Clarkson had :D:D

With a 250F replica on the forum, Khamsin and your Merak, we really do have a nice variation of cars on here.
Welcome aboard Sir.

I dont even have a real Maserati, only 18 but i will have to have one, one day.

Ah yes remember now , its fallen into place , i do apologise , well the said beast has certainly come on in leaps and bounds , no mean feet in itself bar the wallet emptying part hmmmm , by the sounds of it she's certainly very nearly fully fettled credit to you , look forward to as many pics before and after that you can muster , if your into writing , added scripts would be absolutely superb and well worth giving the car its very own thread

regards loz

I have a possible forum car........what about the MR2 355 Ferrari at the Ace Cafe...........Im sure we can make him an offer he can't refuse but I would insist he throws in all his Ferrari branded clothing as part of the deal :tomato9:

I saw a good Ferrari replica today, an 80's Testarossa, biggest give away was the wheels which looked like 348 reps and the wheels did not fill the arches properly.
