That's an interesting question and that would be my thoughts as it's the water pump that leaks and rots the oil pump drive.What causes these to go?

Having said that my car had done 90,000 miles but I don't really know how it had been used before it failed.
I was told by Dick Lovetts it's the same pump as the F430.
Check the water pump carefully as it's a lot of work to remove and re fit.I have found one used
That's my plan. Refurb one to be on hand at all times.Agree with the other posters, trawl the Web and call the known specialists.
Alternatively, would it be worthwhile to look into refurbishment? (eg have a machine shop make a good version of the part that's worn) at the current prices (>2k GBP +shipping and duties *if* you find one), this might make financial sense...
I jumped on the opportunity when I needed one of these (other thread) and found that eurospares had 1 left in stock (us spec). The one that was on the engine will be kept, and might be refurbished one day.
