Mike Hailwood (1940 - 1981)

In 1974, Hailwood was recognised for his bravery when in the 1973 South African Grand Prix he went to pull Clay Regazzoni from his burning car after the two collided on the second lap of the race. Hailwood's driving suit caught fire, but after being extinguished by a fire marshal he returned to help rescue Regazzoni, an act for which he was awarded the George Medal, the second-highest gallantry award that a British civilian can be awarded. IMHO, the orig. Countach, was so beautiful. The later models, not so much.
And while the look of a GS is growing on me, I have to think that the classico 4200, is the cleaner, more refined design. Facelifts aren't always for the better.

I wrote to the factory in around 1984 and floated a few ideas about Ducati's future direction regarding the than Alazzurra ect. To my surprise, six months later arrived a letter of appreciation regarding my interest and 5 posters of Virginio Ferrari racing the F1. The letter said that this is the last poster of Mike at the TT taken down off the wall of the factory all signed by Fabio Taglioni. In dead, this is the bike that inspired my appreciation for DUCATI. NCR HOWLIN' WOLF the end of an era.
