David Piper lost his leg filming Le Mans
I had always wondered why the credits for Le Mans thanked Piper " for his sacrifice". Looked it up and found that bit of trivia.
Piper also still drives his 917, and had some weird arrangement building Ferrari P4's on his own.

Met David Piper during an event at Joe Maccari's - seemed a nice guy. Talked about the 917 and how **** it was to drive at the beginning. Porsche literally had to pay him and Frank Gardner to race the car in the Nurburgring 1000km as all the factory pilots at the time were either "washing their hair" or had a sudden bout of flu etc. Naturally didn't ask him about Mark Hales... :0037:

Also got a genuine period Le Mans poster with his Ferrari and autograph thrown in for free...

It was said in a documentary that McQueen was angry with the film execs for showing little concern for David Piper after the crash, and he made them promise to 'see David right' in respect of his injuries. Apparently they didn't and David, feeling forgotten, was not apparently aware of McQueen's support until years later.
