Reading the full story, they cut it as there were birds in it. So not only was it bugger all to do with the Mistrys but it’s illegal to disturb nesting birds.

Although I’m not sure I believe it, the story says it’s in Sheffield but I can clearly see sunshine in the photo.
Birds don’t need to nest to **** all over your car. Just an overhang....

You're within your rights to cut back vegetation that overhangs your property I believe. You have to give the offcuts back to the owners though.

It’s just a bit of an arsy thing to do. Especially as you do that to a fir it won’t grow back. I can’t believe a creditable tree surgeon did that.

What's the worst neighbourly dispute you've ever heard? It'll do well to beat this one.
Bharat Mistry, 56, and his family were "gutted" when his next door neighbours called in tree surgeons to cut half the branches of the 16ft tall Fir Tree that had stood for 25 years.
The drastic action came after a year-long dispute between Mr Mistry and neighbours Graham and Irene Lee, both in their 70s.
This was the result!

As an approved contractor Tree Surgeon for my local authority this is is how it works - under common law you are entitled to cut back any branches to the boundary line however if in a conservation area or the tree has a protection order then a planning application is usually required.
Cut branches should be offered to you’re neighbour & under no circumstances are you allowed to disturb nesting birds unless a risk to public safety

So what do you do if they don’t want them?
We have a long garden I would always remove any branches or overhang, but then my neighbours are good as gold.
My mates neighbour would cut bits of overhanging bush off and throw them back over the fence at night.
He got ****** off and emptied all his grass cuttings and other garden detritus back over the fence.
I think it stopped

Oh there have been much worse disputes than this, with violence, and with lawsuits costing £££££
