Pointless question Frank; they are shafting us and always have been. As you say, when oil prices go up petrol prices go up as a direct result. When oil prices fall a whole lot of factors come into play to keep the prices high. W4nkers.

Intersting article on the news this morning. Crude oil dropped 18% while petrol has dropped just 1.8%, Tax is 60% and govt plan on putting it up 8p a ltr next year.

Awesome.

And yet the govt want to bring us out of recession - but we can't even afford to drive to the shops to spend the money we don't have!

Still, I'll take expensive fuel over the 'Luxury Tax' which countries like the Netherlands have - just imagine having to pay 25% extra for a nice car because it is deemed a 'luxury'!

Not a luxury tax Pat...merely a socialist way of showing societies dis-approval of those well off enough to spend their hard earned money on a high end car.

Wheres the "luxury tax" on jewelery, cosmetic surgery, Jimmy Choo shoes...etc....discriminatory and self serving.......

How dare oil companies make a profit!

They've got something you want, you choose to buy it. Of course everyone needs it but if you want to save, get an 80mpg diesel thing. We all drive uneconomical cars and have made a choice... Yes I'd like fuel to be under a pound but not going to happen ever again :(

But I'm not buying an 80mpg diesel, my choice :)

Trouble is, the high fuel price impacts the price of everything else since it is needed to deliver the goods, so 1p on a litre ripples all the way down to a pack of bog roll, I say tax something else, put fags up to £20 a pack, legalise and tax dope.. etc or at least offer an alternative like cheap rail travel?

Expected post Lewis, we understand your vested interest, might it be the case your boss reads the forum aswell hahha brownie point well earned mate , tho i do tend to agree with you , dont blame anyone for making a profit , its what we all want to do , but there is an awful lot hypocrosy somewhere when in the Arab states, south america , and some african states the base price is a quarter of what it is here , the transportation costs aren't that high , bulk shipping used to be my field so i understand the costs involved ............... all too often its claimed that a large amount of the profits are ploughed back into R & D and exploration ,in the larger companies thats really not the case in my experience , there's an awful lot of profits hidden and money wasted and spent unecessarily and its the poor western society that has to pay for it

But your right in that we all have a choice whether to drive guzzlers or bumble bees

The oil companies generally make monster profits, and with tax on our petrol at 60% it's not difficult to see why we are at 1.35 a litre.

To say everyone's entitled to make a profit is a bit simplistic, that's the basic premise of capitalism but you need governments to rein in oligopolistic or monopolistic practices, plus cartel behaviour, otherwise things can get out of hand.

I don't care too much about petrol prices from a personal perspective - the company I am contracting to pay all of mine - but the inflated prices are hitting delivery costs and your regular joe, and keeps us in a horrible stagflation scenario.

In Oct 07, oil cost just under 85 dollars a barrel, and petrol was 98p a litre.

Oil currently costs 85.30 dollars a barrel, and petrol is around 135p a litre.

Ergo, somebody is screwing us. The end.

I was in Portugal, last time there were blockades of the oil depots. Otherwise I would have been there supporting the cause, honest!

I wonder what the crude oil and petrol prices were then, with inflation taken into account - pretty sure things are worse now, relatively speaking?
