P0411 Code

Gents, I had a hard time fueling the other day, nozzle kept clicking, took me awhile to fill up. Last night while driving home, CEL come on, pulled the P0411 code, I am wondering if the issue with fueling and the code are related. Can't really seem to find anything, so any input is greatly appreciated!

Wouldn't have thought so. That code is for the secondary air system, which is only working when cold.

There's plenty of experience in tough fuelling here, though

Thanks CatmanV2! Any other input then with the P0411 code?

Air injection pump has failed
Air control solenoids or air lines are faulty
Open or short in wiring harness for air injection system
Air injection system has excessive carbon buildup

Do you hear your air pump on cold start? As far as I am aware you can pretty much ignore this. It's only an emissions thing to get the cats up to temperature ASAP then it all shuts off. My pump runs for about 30-40 seconds after I start moving, jut for comparison. My 4200 was similar.

9 times out of 10 its a rusted pipe that goes round the front of the engine to the air pump.

Start from cold and monitor air leaks from this just be careful and don't put you hand in the aux belt system!

If your having trouble fueling the Carbon Canister is a part that requires changing at service intervals so may be at fault.

When I fuel I turn the nozzle up side down and never have an issue.

Thank you gents! I will take a look and let you know what I find and/or do not find.

The code is telling you that the motronic has detected insufficient oxygen when the secondary air system should be working. The first thing to determine is if the code is flagging on one bank or both.

It is likely to be broken pipe or rusted valve but could also be due to a vacuum leak, solenoid failure or lamdba issue.

Many suffer from the early cut off of the fuel nozzle, try it at an angle. It can also be the carbon canister getting blocked. Mine suffers from this intermittently but if I put the nozzle in sideways it usually works.

Gents, need to figure out what is causing my P0411 code. Only thing I have done so far is look for anything disconnected and check to see if my pipe is rusted. All looks good so far. How do I go about checking the rest of the potential culprits (pump, valves, solenoids, etc.) without just replacing them and hoping for the best?

There's some more info out there. No idea how you'd test:

Damaged or missing check valve
AIR pump intake port plugged/damaged
AIR pump clutch malfunction Holes or damage to exhaust components

Thanks Catman, you are a gentlemen and a scholar! I will do some testing/checking and let you know.

The hard to fill up fueling issue could also be a trapped or blocked fuel tank breather pipe. Somebody had the same issue on the forum a couple of months ago and did a how to guide.

As for the P0411 code you could always clear the code and see if it come back. If its mechanical as in rusted pipe or valve it should come back straight away. If its an intermittent wiring fault then ot may stay clear and give you an idea where to start looking.

I haven't had a fill problem ever since I started removing key from ignition before pressing button to open up gas cap.

As for the P0411 code, I clear it, on it comes back right away.

Gents, you all seem to have way more expertise than I do so I hope you will be gentle.
I too have a repetitive P0411 code (although the interval between them varies) but I always get P1443 at the same time. This has been going on for a couple of years but as it was explained to me this only affects emissions while cold so cancelling is not a problem.
She is off to Bob Houghtons for MOT and service in a couple of weeks so if this extra code narrows the problem I would love to have them get the parts before I get there.
Up to now I have been carrying the code reader just to check each time the light comes on.
Thanks for you patience.
