Oil Cooler Hose

Whilst replacing the front bulbs the other day, part of the process is to remove the undertray ( rather than removing the wheels ) to gain access to the securing bolts for the sidelights.

When I removed the undertray, there was an area of damp oil/crud on the drivers side just below where the oil cooler pipe connects to the oil tank.

I cleaned up the tray and replaced and went for a run for a couple of hours.
After removing the tray again, there was evidence of some oil staining - not drops or a puddle just a light smearing in the same location.

I had a look at the oil cooler pipe and my question is; should the brass nut have a split along it? And is it just a matter of tightening this nut up a touch?

I've attached some pics.

All oil pressures are fine at idle and running.

cheers,

Gus.

What model is this, Gus? Is it a 4200 or GS and does the pipe runs across the front of the car to the oil tank?

Not good news then, unfortunately. You will need to replace the pipe - it's a flexy pipe which goes into shaped metal tubing. The pipe costs somewhere between £150/£200 from memory and it's at least a couple of hours labour. Autoshield noticed that my GS had exactly the same problem last week when they had it in for the clutch replacement - the brass nut had fractured, although not as badly as yours. The replacement was c£500 all in plus new oil and a new oil filter. Not a cheap job, sadly. IIRC Frank (Parisien) had the same issue on his 4200.

A note of warning for all 4200/GS owners - get underneath and check this pipe for cracks!

OK, thanks, I thought as much.
At least it was spotted before it finally let go. I think I'll put a jubilee clip around it on the way to the garage just in case.

Given Eurospares are listing new £210 and user £98 I suspect getting a new nut on it is a great idea!

Haha Matt. Maybe a little more luck than NickP (sorry Nick!). This pipe connects the oil pump to the oil tank I believe.

Marios has changed 3 in the last couple of months including mine. I had no noticeable issues, car didn't seem to be using any oil and oil pressure etc. was fine. I asked Marios to go over the car completely - he's clearly very thorough!

Apparently the pipe has been redesigned and strengthened now, so hopefully this issue won't reoccur. The biggest cost was the labour as the pipe disappears into the depths of the engine - lots to remove before getting access to it. Although an unexpected repair, the car is now in rude health and has had an interim oil change - can't be a bad thing I suppose.

Sounds ready for another 197kph run out if you ask me :)

On a private road, of course! I'm glad that their measurement device wasn't nearby to capture the higher indicated units of velocity shown on my gauge sometime earlier that day. On a private road.

Guys,

Just to clarify, I threw a curve ball earlier stating it was the oil tank to oil cooler hose.
It is in fact the oil tank to oil pump hose - the lower hose that you can see after you take the undertray off.

Sorry for any confusion.

Gus.

Same problem, I suspect. Though I think your bill just went up a bit :(

Would be worse in a US spec car it seems.

No confusion - realised from your pics and description that it must be the same pipe we were all discussing. Where will you be taking the car for repairs?
