Number plates which are worth a lot more than the cars they are on

Years ago in the mid 90's possibly earlier I saw BEG41T on a Pug 209 GTI spaced as BEG 4 IT... well made me smile.

Oh and also a while back but not as far back I saw an Audi A3 with AUD 1, it was on the Mancunian Way...that too made me smile I would have thought it would be on an A8...

Robert, he has no interest whatsoever in cars. As far as he is concerned, it starts when he wants it to, gets him where he wants to go and he knows what most of the buttons do. So, he's happy. Yes Woody, they're his initials. He was sorely tempted by the latest offer. But, bless him, the money would just sit in the bank. So, he's keeping it.

The clue is in the word Lexus - the Miele of cars.

My father owns an eight year old wreck of a Lexus is200. His number plate is two letters followed by a single number. He turned down a written offer of £23,000 for it last Tuesday. He bought it in the seventies for £350.

Right choice. £40/50k plate IMHO.

I swear, no tales, I saw an Audi TT in Mold, N Wales, about 7 years ago:

M1NGE

What a giggle, but also what a ****!

It is now. IIRC that is owned by a dealer in the North West, I think Smith, Kinght and Fay. It is on an A8 now (and was on the one occasion I saw it on the A6 in Hazel Grove many moons ago)

Used to see a similar plate in Stockport from time to time....it was on a white E36 M3 cab which was the current M3 at the time. On close inspection, it was M7 NGE. Still, made me smile.

Elliott, if your Dad in law is not bothered about selling and is happy with his car, then good luck to him, it's a nest egg. I have my initials followed by 2 numbers and I would not sell that, unless I was really old and could not drive anymore, then maybe (I often think that's not that far off).

Have you looked into when your plate was issued?

My plates are 2*2 but the other way round (numbers first) which are worth a fair bit less.

Frank, it's only a distant thought, weeks might just be a bit too short, but some days I get up and think I should be selling up, buying a new supercar and driving the world for a few years. Then of course reality kicks in, I get a back twinge and settle back down to work and earning some extra's. So thanks for the life expectancy projection, but I might just surprise you, hahahaha.

Hi Bob,
No I have never checked on that and sorry my plate is numbers first, my previous comments were wishfull thinking mate. I've had my plate now for about 15 years, but I had never thought about when it was actually released.

Cheers

You've got the same as me then. Most of them were sold at auction by the DVLA over the last 20 years rather than issued on cars before the war as are the ones the other way round. I have four - three bought at auction myself and one off a broker. I see them as a reasonable store of value and a bit of fun. Some people hate them mind and I suspect in the current market they are fairly illiquid!

They are an investment and I like to be a bit different. I am currently looking for one for the wife, but they are either silly money, or not that good. I have been beaten a few times at auction by dealers, who then try to sell it on to me for 50% more than they paid, so I am biding my time.

Saw a new White Fiesta today with the number 8 K. It deserves a better car than that.
