But perhaps similar.

Just looking at the recent pics of GS interiors, has anyone tried to replace the 4200 tunnel, NIT screen and so on with a GS unit?

I realise that you'd lose the aircon *display* function on the screen, but is this duplicated in a GS console?

Naively I'm working on the basis that everything else is just a switch, so it's a wiring problem :)

Thoughts?

Don't think there is a display on the GS, just knobs.
One **** of a wiring problem...unless the complete loom section for the GS heating can plug into the removed loom section of the 4200!

Heh. OK, I can take that on board, it's not a *small* problem but it hardly seems OTT

Switches which are only a couple of wires (I assume), I count 7, two wires each (best guess)

Window controls (three wires at a guess)
Mirror (call it 8)
Reverse t-bar (3?)
Sport, Auto and Ice (6 more total?)
And the control knobs (wild guess 3 each)

I make that in the region of 40 cables. So definitely not tiny, but hardly beyond the wit of man either, I'd have thought.

In addition the ISO connectors for the stereo would need to be moved from the NIT to the dash along with the FM and AM antennas.

Natch you'd lose GPS (Oh woe is me), and phone (ditto), and trip (I never use it anyway)

What else are we missing?

Have you found a complete GS dash going spare?
Personally I don't find the GS dash such an improvement to carry out the swop. Some would say it was a downgrade, unless you like the carbon fibre!
It would be nice if a wiring diagram was available (will be somewhere), you might be lucky the main wiring loom between 4200 and GS the same, the sub loom for the whole central console might be the only difference and can be swopped plug and play!

Not found one, no. Personally I prefer the look of the GS dash and tunnel, but I was really more interested in getting rid of the POS 4200 NIT and stereo :)

*If* a cheap centre console fell into my lap and I felt like spending some time, I may consider it, but....

Meh, your mileage may vary ;) IMHO it's ugly, hard to use madly difficult to upgrade. I want phone, I want iPod. I can do these things, and will be as soon as I work out which weekend I have free next, but they are over difficult. Should really be a 10 minute job to drop in a new head.
Oh, and the CD player is rubbish ;)

GS also has a push button start Catman. You wouldn't have to wire this up, but I'd imagine you would want to use it if it was there. The main issue you're going to have is finding a 'cheap' console/dash. The switch panel below the CF dash surround is £00s and then there's the cost of the CF bits. One of my secondary reasons for buying my old 3200 over a 4200 at the time was the dash and NIT. The old technology and difficulty in upgrading anything to sound remotely decent or have connectivity to anything modern put me off completely.

Ahh push button. Good point. I'd probably look at an aftermarket PKE with that built in. I suspect anything else would be potentially tricky.

Yes, the cost is a definite detraction. Interesting exercise though. :)

Yah. I agree, but that's linking to a GS specific ECU at a guess from what people have told me about how it works.

I am tempted by a passive system, with push button start, though. Maybe

you could easily implement one like ive done on my 156 you just need to insert the key then push the starter button.
think the kit cost me about £25 and fitted withing about 30 mins. it was a very nice metal button aswell.

Oh yes, that's *simple*. Did it with my 116 years back as the key switch was ropey. I'll dig out the link of the kind of thing I'm looking at where pressing the button turns the ignition on, and then pressing it again starts, then stops then ignition off.
