Lewis, a friend of mine is selling a very nice Boxster S around your budget - he bought it as an interim when his new M3 was stolen and now has a new car. I can let you have details if you're interested.

I take your point Matt, but we're talking here about a car which drives even worse than the last Spider and if that's my reason for ruling it out, it seems a bit silly. It also has a lot less space inside. But a bit of a performance bargain and I'd rather have the 'real' Alfa V6.

Lewis, the GTV Spider drives really well. I was under the mis conception that it was a terrible car, but its not, it really does handle well and did not notice any scuttle shake.

Worth a test drive if nothing else.

Its just the seats in the GTV have always been, well, you sit on them, rather then in them and with the leather you slip around a lot.

Good option...ticks a lot of boxes...nice to drive too......disagree about it being a poor mans Porsche.......after all Porsches first cars weren't that sophisticated nor refined nor that pricey...and during the 911 life/reign they've sold all sorts of front drive cars too(!)...so almost back to basics/affordability.

Interesting point Frank. A friend of mine who is into his Porsches has been through all sorts of 996s and 997s. He bought a Boxster S a while back as part of a deal just to sell on at a profit - reckoned he'd kept the wrong car when left with a 997 Carrera. Apparently the 'big secret' is the Cayman S. Those in the know wonder why anyone would buy a 997

Agree .....its understated but set up very nicely...to maximise your abilities......the S.......the older hairier 993 model was the last of the 911 re-incarnations......bullet proof, so well made, it looked as good after 6 yrs as it did after 2......996/997......pass!!!!

Yes please! I'd like something different from the norm although that's not easy with such a common car. An acquaintance has just bought a Limited Edition S and is thrilled with it...

The seats are a bit odd in the GTV so I would change them to these Milanos:

I have seen them in a GTV before and look the business.

Am loving those seats Matt.........Bet they cost as much as the GTV....

Not cheap Andy indeed. £1500 the pair if you can still find them.

I recon the best way is to find some used cloth ones and have them retrimmed, still gona cost a grand though, but worth it.

But surely if you are cruising rather than bruising its OK...

Nail on head there Andy! As Matt says the outgoing 916 Spider is a good drive despite the journos slating it. If this Spider is 25% stiffer, has better luggage space, better build quality, more power (though heavy) it should be decent, just not Z4/TT brilliant. Will I notice how I drive... Probably not!

I might set up a test drive at HWM, they do Alfas and Astons and are good people.

Problem now is colour. We already have a red/black Alfa which is fine as it's a period car, but as rule bright red is out. She doesn't like Misano blue with black leather and I haven't seen V6s in any other colour! Black, blue or red with tan would be fine. Think it's the black interiors we're not liking... And most or all V6s have black interior.

Thanks Dem, if they get something in I'll give you a PM and we can go and have a look together. GOT to be V6, no red/black and no blue/black. Every other combo would probably work.
