New Boiler Quote - Does this seem good?

Hey,

Well yesterday morning had my boiler condemned as it had originally been installed wrong, the walls of my house are quite thick so the installers had taken 2 flues cut on down and sleeved the other with the cut down one to make it fit through the wall.

Now a few years down the line the chopped up flu has deteriorated to the point were it wasn't removed by the engineer but brushed out of the hole in flakes of rust resulting in the whole thing being condemned as the boiler was never fit for the application.

So, we've had a lot of trouble with the boiler over the time we've lived here and as we have no hot water or heating we have had someone round from British Gas to survey and provide a quote.

It's working out at £3,867 and what we get for that is

Glowworm Flexicom 30cx
Wireless Programmable Thermostat (One you can take to different rooms that works over RF, useful as the house is over 4 floors)
2 years complimentary Homecare 200 which is essentially a warranty on the entire system including all existing pipes and radiators.
Internal Condensate & Pump
Powerflush as half our raditors have cold spots and no matter how often are bled don't get warm. Also with this deal we can have unlimited powerflushes throughout the lifetime of the system as long as we keep up the homecare which we had anyway.
And a Magnetic System Filter for collecting ferous particles from the insides of radiators.

Also getting a £200 off voucher from the gas engineer who condemned the thing and 20,000 nectar points for the purchase.

We can finance the whole thing over a completely flexible payment term that allows for early settlement with no fee's at any stage in the finance and we can overpay if we are particularly flush one month.

The new boiler also takes up a quarter of the space of the old one in the kitchen.

Does this seem a good deal to anybody on here who knows about these things?

Cheers

Was it Emtee or Granturismo Dan who said they knew someone in the trade?

Check with either one........on your original thread.

On the face of it thats not a bad price, I am not a plumber but run a fit out and refurb company and generally specialise in high end residential projects, I would expect to pay £2k (inclusive) for a boiler install for an average/large house without the extras you have been quoted it does depend on the type though, system boilers (with a hot water tank or combi type without) - the 'not getting hot radiators' would worry me, no amount of flushing will solve crossed flow/return pipes, blocked pipes, stuck radiator valves, bad installation (stabbing off circuits with the wrong size pipes) I think Gloworm are German so on a par with Worcester or Valliant all quality boilers.
You will always be assured with a British Gas install, but other independents also offer the same, sometimes at less cost, ensure they are 'Gas Safe Registered' the old Corgi scheme and dont just 'get a bloke in to check' after they have cocked everything up. I would have thermostatic valves fitted to your radiators as well.
Dont worry too much it may sound like a minefield and it pays to shop around.
On the plus side modern boilers are smaller and quieter - plus more efficient

Thanks RSM, I just had a text from the guy who was round earlier offering to come round tomorrow night to sign me up, the guy was a nice chap and was very knowledgable but I'm not buying him so we'll have to cope with showering at the gym for a few days.

I think its a bit rich TBH. Boilers are not the expensive items they used to be, and decent ones are under a grand.

Ok, your getting some bells and whistles with the wireless thing and the flush can be done by anyone.

I would try your local heating engineer and take his advice.

That's a £700.00 boiler. A wireless thermostat is about £100.00.

At the very very worst you could double this for labour, covering fitting and repair to the system, so there's more than £2K with of 'others' in there.

I accept that there's piece of mind in there, but that's very expensive piece of mind!

British gas are good but not worth the extra money you pay, I would get a quote from a local guy, I bet you get it for around £2.5k

I recon £800 for the boiler inc remote, £500 labout to fit and back flush the rads if you wave pound notes at a local guy.

Remeber, he might be able to lose the VAT also if you re paying cash.

Hi all,
Just found this thread and although maybe a bit late, this info won't hurt for future readers.
A condemned boiler is like a car that did not pass it's mot. It's not safe to use NOW, but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed and must be scrapped.
A lot of dodgy blokes use it as an excuse to flog you a new boiler, but you should always get a second opinion.
One simple reason to condemn an old boiler can be that the ventilation is not enough. Clear the hole or make it a bit bigger, and Bob's your uncle!
But this is just one of many examples.
Look here for more.
