Thanks everyone. A bit wiped out this week so far as it seems I managed to pick up a sickness bug on my travels as a bonus :)

I managed to find a picture of this car in 2014:

Screenshot 2023-05-04 at 14.06.44.png

I think this confirms that wheels will go back to Grigio Mercury and need to change the grille.

I have the inner of the original grille (the black mesh with the trident) but not necessarily the outer.

The outer lip has been painted black and attached to the new style slatted grille.

So I might be able to put the two back together again but won't have the chrome outer.

This might mean I need to find yet another grille, or just order a new one.

This got me thinking, I know LE Spec cars have a black mesh, but maybe the chrome mesh grille would look better? Do quite like the chrome...

Haven't got her up on my ramp yet to have a proper poke around underneath.

I will need to then arrange for a service, this smarts a bit as I would quite like to do it myself, but I think I need to keep the book stamped otherwise potential future buyers might be out off. With a past car I serviced myself I actually put the invoice in the folder and a photo of the items that had been removed/changed in the folder for avoidance of doubt!

I have quite a choice of specialists within an hour and a half of me. Clearly there is value in not just a service and stamp in the book but a good checkover.

The closest is Grimaldi, but I didn't really gel with them when they did some work on my Assetto Corsa, and they left my throttle pot attached by only one nut and bolt which I thought wasn't great.

Then there is Giallo which seem ok to me and that is where the car has mostly been before. They have quoted £1000 for an annual service and £1600 for a Scheduled mileage service.

Mcgrath is about 1hr 20 mins away, so tempted to try them. Heard good things?

Then out of curiosity I asked for a quote from Jardine Colchester Main dealer (formerley lancaster?) £1300 for a Scheduled mileage service and checkover actually seemed quite reasonable. Does anyone use them???

Then there is Aldous Voice although that's 1hr40 away. Both Giallo and AV are the "wrong side of that bridge" as it were!

Any thoughts on who to use/pricing are welcomed.

Most of my car’s history is with McGrath and the underside and mechanicals are immaculate, I think they are quite picky about what cars they look after. However living in Devon I have a main Ferrari dealership 20 minutes away which sevices older Maserati’s so for mainstream service work I would use them but anything more I would use Sports Italia.

Yes looks so much better with Grigio Mercury - if you’re going to be spending time and money, might as well get it back to standard as much as possible. The older the car is, the more important it is to be standard. And it looks good of course!

I think I saw a picture of this car at this weekend's Spa Classic (on a French speaking Maserati forum called maseratitude), looks nice.

Unrelated, agree on the going to standard. On the grille, both black and chrome would work, do what you like best.
(matter of fact, I might consider swapping my chrome original for a black one, or just painting it)

Well, what a first week I've had with this car!

In a good way!!

I was planning on taking my 1966 Alfa Sprint GT Veloce to the Spa classic, but when I was washing it I realised that the new boot seal I fitted was badly leaking water. I look at the forecast and it was for heavy rain for the whole trip. Then pictured all of the steaming up on the way and didn't ahve time to muck about with the leak.

Sat next to it was the GS.

You can guess the rest!

I was only too delighted to take it instead, my new toy etc. After the most cursory of checkovers I took it instead.

So I've done 750 miles to Spa and back, 220 back from darlington, about 1000 miles in my first week of ownership!

There were four of us and we hired a house.

I also got to do some laps around the track, only about 8 laps but that was plenty enough to have fun and experience the circuit.

The track sessions are quite comedy to be honest, there is a two page disclaimer, no briefing at all and then as long as you have your towing eye and a helmet, off you go!

One lap behind the course car then they release you to do whatever you want, managed a few laps like on a proper track day.

It was a bit dicey though, some of the worst trackday driving I've ever seen, want to overtake on both sides, of overtake 3 cars in a braking zone??? Then go ahead if you are that kind of knob!

As is often the case some of the most powerful/premium cars were like a rolling road block, such as a C6 ZR1 and a Ferrari California, both seemed to never check their mirrors and have very wide cars that were very slow in the corners!

Also shared the track with a Lamborghini Miuria and a few GT40 reps and a Mclaren Can Am rep!

I was impressed with the composure of the car on track and the way it handled, fast enough in a straight line not to be embarassing too.

Had a bloody brilliant time on track!! Spa is right up there with the best place I've driven I'd say.

Spa is not too brake heavy but the brakes are I would say only just about adequate on mine despite new disks and pads.

Got to have a look at what pads I have as the initial bite is poor on road and track. They also squeeked like a ******* before and after the track work.

We had the most amazing time, second time at the Spa Classic, its such a laid back atmosphere, you can go wherever you like and the Ardenne region is obviously lovely, also stuffed full of good resteraunts.

The roads in the area are pretty rough in places though! Like many I wished I could use the sport gearbox with standard suspension...

Oh, and as you might have guessed, the car was faultless.....!

Also, the car got so much positive attention on the way there and at the circuit too. In my old Silver 3200 I never seemed to get noticed.

This included 4 very boisterous Belgian blokes hanging out of their car behind me wanting to film the car in tunnels near Brussels!

Brake pad mystery half solved..... There is very recent invoice for a full set of Pagid Racing RS44 Brake pads. £350 for a full set so not cheap pads.

These ones: https://www.pagidracing.com/en/products/racing-brake-pads/product-family-rs/rs-44.html

I've used the likes of Ferodo DS2500 pads on the road to good effect, also PFC pads, but these seem way too aggressive for street use???

Is there a thread on brake pad choices? What do people find works?

I think i will look for a fast road type pad, most of all I want good initial bite.

There have been a few. DS2500 are a good choice if you are comfortable with them not being R90 approved. The initial bite is quite sharp I found.

DS performance are a good R90 middle ground.

Then of course there is something else entirely.
