Mad Bob, a mate of mine, has an S tropic V10 spider and it is an absolutely fantastic car. It's very quick, sounds great (Akrapovich exhaust) and sticks like glue in just about any weather. The interior is beautifully made and it's a very nice place to be when travelling very fast however, I wouldn't swap it for my spyder. It's just too clinical and does everything too well and, to me, there just isn't any character. I'll stick with my old rattle trap.

I have a friend who was keen on the idea of buying an R8. He was really excited to finally be test driving one a few weeks ago but came away from the experience rather cold. He didn't find the car very involving and felt it lacked something.

Then he went and had a go in a DB9 which he subsequently snapped up and is very happy with. I tried to get him to buy a GT but he never got round to driving one.

No idea how good an Audi is...but if you say you drive one people think its a hatch or saloon car.

Say a Maserati and they only realy have a couple of models to choose from...all rather special.

and said "Lovely car Tom is that the new TT"
My wife said exactly the same thing to my friend who came to show me his new R8, he was crestfallen.

Funny thing was, it was back at the dealers for numerous electrical faults for longer than he actually had it on his drive, the dealer had to buy it back and he ended up buying a DBS (which certainly wasn't mistaken for anything else!)

I think that'll be more a RWD issue.

I really struggle to enjoy AWD performance cars personally, there is so much more feel and fun in a high powered RWD car, plus they remind you to be glad you're alive when you drive in the wet!

I probably do see more GT's than R8's here but that's probably because I don't have a lot of interest in the R8.

On another note, my wife reported she saw two different Gransports within half an hour yesterday. (She was nowhere near any dealers or indy's).

While I have never really been a fan the early ones are now a great used buy.....Used ones start at around 40k and that seems alot of car for the money......If you want an every day supercar then it seems good value to me........especially when the Galardo starts at 60k and is not really an everyday car.....

Yes, £10k more than a GT of a similar age so it seems some people are aware this isn't a TT!

The R8 is never going to impress on a test drive in the way that a car with a big, noisy engine up front will. This lighter, mid-engined, 4wd car will come into it's own when driven close to the limit on a twisty road. I'm quite fond of powerful GTs, but I can appreciate something that's also a precision driving tool. I'd happily have a '67 Camaro and a Cayman or R8 in my garage.

But I see your point about feeling alive in the wet. Managed to scare the s*** out of my sister when giving her a lift to the station in the rain last night!

Although I haven't lusted after an R8 like I have lusted after a GT, I have been thinking about getting one. It'll never have the charisma that the GT has (or even my GS has) but it's one of those cars that are on my list of cars that I want to own. Would also love to own a DB9 at some point, just to scratch the itch.

I drove the 4.2 when they first came out and whilst the H gate gearbox was lovely the car felt lardy and slow compared to the RS4 Avant I had driven to the dealer in. If I was to go for one it would have to be the V10 lump.

The other thing is that the R8 sounds rubbish... ;) The fire breathing in particular lacks charachter ;)

Never been a fan.

I have a lot of respect for Audis. Very nice cars and some of the detail design touches are great - you don't really notice them, but when you get in a car that's been less well considered you notice them.

But the R8 has never really been my cup of tea. If I was up for that sort of car I'd be looking at Lamborghini or Ferrari....and if I wanted to stick to the R8's price point it'd be Astons or, maybe, 911s.

I have an RS4 (B7) and think that might be the sweet spot of the cars they do. That and the S4 (B8)

The RS4 is a seriously, seriously rapid cross country car. Bugger all room in it though - the GT is bigger in the cabin. Also makes a lovely noise and has good road presence.

Never been an Audi fan as have found them sterile against a BMW.....Its the front and four wheel drive I think......but was around the Audi dealership yesterday as work are giving me an A5 for the next 6 months to use and must say they do look good and well built. They had a new R8 in the showroom and I must say I was impressed....

R8 is an inflated TT in terms of looks. Ref to sound, even a V10+ wouldnt draw be closer than a Maser 4.7 V8.

You can have the R8, BUT ITS STILL AN AUDI :)
