I'm sure this car used to have the most outrageous and IMHO horrific body kit. There were pics of it on the'net. Seems maybe his taste has improved (I mean changed) and he's got part way through returning it to something approaching normal.

It's not a Cup. Just the standard tax-avoiding 2 lt. version that was available in Italy at that time. Produced 306 bhp, not the 330 bhp of the Cup. Still quick and fun though. I had one in the late nineties until the 3200 came out.

Sorry Rex - it's not the Cup engine, not the Cup power, and not the right age. Same block, yes, but several differences. Cups weren't produced until '96, though the 24 rhd UK cars were built in 1997.

Back then a Cup cost about £40k, while a low mileage used 2 lt lhd normal Ghibli could be had on the continent for about £10k. I know, I did both.

I wondered where that monstrosity had gone, not seen any news of it for years.

If you watch the Youtube clip below it shows some more pictures of the build and the the finished car in all its gruesome detail. If you click on the "show more" button under the text it gives full details of the spec, apparently they added a Nitrous Oxide kit at a later date.

More details and pictures can be found on Enrico's website (go to page 79 of Maseratisti):
http://www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk/alfieri00a.htm

It would be nice to rescue it and return it to standard but I suspect that would be a very expensive exercise.

I wonder if his decision to re-design it came before or after the impact that damaged the front bumper!
Strip the filler off, the interior out, slap on a salvage bumper, blow it over and this could be a track day special...

Ye Gods, what a BOS. Another shining example of how to spend lots of cash to ruin a car. The french again, don't you just hate them?

Unfortunately we can't blame the French on this occasion. The guy selling the car is the guilty party in its mutilation, I believe the car came from France originally (via Italy) hence the French registration. If you look at the ebay seller name and the name of the guy who posted the details on Enrico's website (pg 79) you will see they are the same. The guy's company were called Mutant Automotive and were based in Oxfordshire somewhere, I think their usual fodder was typical boy racer shopping trolleys and they decided to ruin a Ghibli to be different.

"their usual fodder was typical boy racer shopping trolleys"

that's hilarious and absolutely accurate- I think one of those pictures shows it next to a Corsa at a show; I don't mean to be snobby, (I've nothing against Vauxhalls [actually that's a lie]) but I don't think they were aiming for the Stanford Hall audience...

Didn't they take out the side repeater lamps and replace them with a wobbly row if irregular LEDS in the wing-mirrors...?

Initial eBay pictures makes it look like it's got an impact on the NS lower door...
