This is the dilemma Benny. We're back in germany again. However, that is a good engine. I think from memory the 944 uses a transaxle too. My initial thought was to use ( sorry conaero!!) the 2.3 S14 engine out of the original (and real, in my opinion) BMW M3.
I used to have one, and the engine, apart from being an absolute screamer, was bullet proof. I'll find and post a picture of a birdcage chassis. That alone is a sight to behold.

I had the pleasure of working on Nick Mason's Birdcage back when... I didn't dare stand in it, it just looked like it wouldn't take my weight, did everything I needed to reaching in from the outside!!! Amazing how they hold together with nothing more than a cossamer thread and a prayer....
