key stolen - what are my options

Returned home today to discover we have had unwelcome visitors who helped themselves to lap tops and jewelry - plus the spare black key for my 3200. Still have one black key that I was using plus the red but wondering what you guys suggest are my options as I will have sleepless nights even though car is currently in garage. Can I get another key and then get the code changed on them all to neutralise the key they took? Not sure what the insurance companies view will be on it (Aviva) - hopefully it won't impact on no claims but I also carry a hefty excess so may not be worth claiming? Steve

Surely the key being stolen from the house & assuming it was not left out in full view the house insurance should cover it and additional cost of replacement locks/programming?

Shouldn't need to claim on motor insurance

Thats what I thought but the guy I spoke to regarding house insurance said it would have to be car claim. I think the loss adjusters will be visiting tomorrow so hopefully they may talk more sense.

No keep pushing on the house insurance, naturally it is in their interest to get you claiming on lots of policies and loosing you NCB's...

Fit a power trip switch in a secret place. That way anyone attempting to start the car that should not be will be presented with no power.

If get another Black key (£80-00 approx plus labour to programme the keys) then this and your remaining Black key has to be reprogrammed at the same time and then because the stolen key has not been recoded it will not be recognised by the imobiliser.

i would agree that your insurance should pay for this to get fixed. the immobiliser stores the codes for all the active keys and the stolen key can be removed form the list so it wont work any more so that wont be hard. IF you are not getting it all paid for by insurance there is a crowd in wales who can reprogram the immobiliser and program new keys including a master key (although it cannot be red since Maserati will not sell blank red keys) so this can all be sorted. I would definitely get spares and whatever you do don't start the car get out and shut the drivers door, as the car locks the doors and you are then locked out with the engine running and no way into the car. This happened to me after I got spares made!

You can reprogramme your own remaining keys using the red key. This will set a new immobiliser code rendering the key they took unusable as it won't match the new code. I'm not sure of the precise steps but it goes something like insert red key turn on the ignition, leave it on for 2 minutes, turn off, insert black key, turn ignition on for 2 minutes. this should write the new code to the key. If you buy a new key it will take a week or so to arrive and the dealer will do the key programming for you.

Thanks Nick and others. Loss adjuster can't come till next Thursday due to all the flood claims!!Tempted to reset current code using your advice Nick - is it written in a manual anywhere that you can recall just to be sure of proceedure. Slightly woried I could really mess things up. Steve

as I'm not 100% sure of this its probably best to take it to a dealer who will reprogramme your keys for you, it a 10 min job.

Well done Nick, Steve, can you come back with the correct procedure on reprogramming the new key using the red master, it will be good knowledge for our how to archive.

Unless your house policy stipulates, that car keys are not covered, then they certainly are. But, remember, more you claim, more your premium will go up! If its less then £100, i would not bother.
I know what its like to have a car stolen, then subsequently, written off, cause the thief trashed it, poo rubbed all over the interior. Never been able to sleep well since!

I'm pretty sure key reprogramming has been covered before on here and resembles what NickP has iterated. It works just the same as if you just bought a spare key, you can reprogram from your red key. I believe Maserati use a rolling code system, so if you reprogram from the red key you should be quite safe.

you will note this happened shortly after i got spares. So I had to get a mate from work to come pick me up run me home (12 miles away) to get the new spare key and drive back to the car 35 minutes later which was sitting idling nicely (I know unusual for a 3200) i opened the door and got in. But I thought what would I have done if i had no spare key!

A mate of mine did a similar thing, he was driving and eyeing up some talent on the pavement and ended up rear ending someone (no not the talent). He jumps out with the engine running an some how manages to lock the door behind him, MKII Cavalier I seem to remember. I hope she was worth it Nick!

So after he sees the mess of the front of the car, he has to use a brick to get back in again, not a good day!

I had a dodge Hire car in USA. Came out of Walmart, 90 degrees, got to car, opened, turned engine on and aircon full blast, closed drivers door, put bags in boot, closed boot, and all doors locked!! Spent 45 mins waiting for a lock smith. He told me he did about 5 cars a day!! Stupid idea, originating in USA!!!!

New member in Aus, first post. Hi all. I am in the process of trying to get a spare key for my 2005 Spyder CC. I sent my only key away to get a new one burned and had a nervous time while it was in the hands of Australia Post. The attempt failed as the guy wasn't able to burn one using a generic programmable key. He said that there was a problem with my release of transponder? I am now awaiting the return of my key and wondering what the next step should be. the mechanic said he would need to have the car to be able to set up a new key. Robert's comment set me to wonder if there is more to know. Any advice greatly appreciated. Regards, Peter.
