So, I'm the mysterious forum member that bought Gavin's lovely 3200 mentioned in the for sale section. It's a lovely lovely car and I'm very pleased however...

I suffered a huge blowout on the m6 while heading back to Scotland and am currently stuck at Hilton Park Services on the M6. It happened in the 50mph average speed camera section and although I tried to get it off the road, the idiotic Highways Agency have stuck metal crash barriers along the whole route with NO breaks. Had to stop and get out in a live lane then frantacially wave at traffic to alert them of the obstruction.

The tyre is almost entirely off the rim and I can't get a new one till tomorrow. So Travelodge it is for me!

My heart rate is only now reducing, a couple of drivers missed it at speed by millimetres only.

P Zero with bags of tread left and even wear. I must have picked up a nail or something but the tyre is so shredded that I'll probably never know.

Had there been a hard shoulder, it would have been fine. I saw no reason why there is such a long section of road with no access off the active lanes at all. Crazy.

Another guy was recovered from the other carriage way in a 63 plate Mercedes van that had suffered hydraulic failure. He was utterly terrified and white as a sheet.

Your safe that the main thing, bad luck, i had the same on my c63 before xmas, rear tyre blew and came off the rim at 60, turned out the sidewall of the (new) tyre had failed, Bridgestone replaced all 4 FOC.

keep the tyre if you can, you never know.

Eeeek! Glad your fine, and cars unscathed. My drive was fine by comparison, dark and rain, in a "new" car, not the best.

And the tyre make is........... Pirelli! They have quite a reputation don't they?

Glad you are fine and well done on the car. Looks like a great example...

Hi guys, ok the cat is out of the bag and you know who the proud newer owner is.

He called me to explain what happened and the first thing I asked was he ok. Car no, that can be fixed. It happened to me once when my rear tyre burst on my Ferrari 328GT in France and I spun around several times. Thought my time was up.

I called Outrun again tonight on his mobile phone tonight to double check that he truly is ok. A friend of mine and I offered go up and see him, but he is cheery, happy and enjoying a film on tv.

Outrun is looking forward to driving again tomorrow. Just hope there will be no more blow outs. I hope he keep the bits of rubber as a souvenir and perhaps as a reminder to the stories he can tell his children and friends in the future.

Most importantly I am just glad he is ok and the car is undamaged. However I still feel guilty as it was I who sold him the car.

Wow what a story but glad the car stays with one of us guys. Thought my time was up when I had a blow out in a E12 BMW 3.0 S going down Birdlip Hill Gloucestershire at speed 30 years ago.

Looking like I will get getting a Falken tyre from Kwik fit. I think they're decent and good value and I'm not exactly a fan of Pirelli!!!!!! I could change both fronts and ditch the other Pirelli for piece of kind but we'll see what price Kwik Fit wants first. I am also tempted to change the rears too if they have them but I wonder if that's just a little over the top. Rears are currently Contis with reasonable tread left but as the car has been little used, they've been on for a while. My concern is that having it sitting around has contributed to the issue and fresh rubber would be better.

My GS runs Vredestein which I've had several times before with no issues. I heard they can blow if the car hits a pothole while in sport mode. I think that's more to do with our terrible roads not working well with very low profiles. I wonder if a change from 35 to 40 would reduce those occurrences?

The other option would be to not use sport mode so much. That's not going to happen!!

..and that's why, I have a space saver

i wouldn't try to change the wheel in this situation - abandon the car to the CCTV cameras and get as far away and safe as possible. I might even have a go at driving to a safer place on the rim... managed it in a 4WD X-Type a few years ago.
