I've just spent a while sitting in the car on the drive, adjusting various things, twiddling knobs (quiet at the back!) and playing with the hi-fi. I have the 705 watt, 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen upgrade and not surprisingly, it certainly beats what's in the Strad. I played "Back in Black" as the test album and adjusted the 3D surround settings, sub-woofer, etc until it was spot on. Time well spent I'd say.

Have to agree on some of the JLR sound systems. There is a nice Bowers & Wilkins one in the XJL and it sounds pretty decent to me. Best I've experienced in a car.

Still mulling over replacing the Outlander PHEV with a 100% EV but not finding anything that ticks all the boxes yet.

Even the wife is amazed how good music sounds on a decent system and she is no audiophile. Amazing to hear things you don't hear on lesser systems. Or how much fuller, broader and deeper they sound. Can really make the hairs stand up on some tracks. Cr4p audio just doesn't have the same effect.

Agree with the JLR comments above.
The Bowers system was terrific (XF s) and the Meridian 23 speaker set up in the Velar is bonkers good. (Mercs Baumester system was very good too)
Never had or heard a B&O set up but they’ve a great rep and it seems you’re impressed Ewan.
A decent sound system is near the top of my priority “extras” list in a vehicle.

how i miss the good old days when you could walk in to a car audio dealer and choose/peruse all the radio cassettes on show, swap out systems, fit uprated speakers in the doors and cut holes in the parcel shelves for more, equalizers with all those led's, boosters etc etc

I remember those custom car audio days and did my bit to support the industry! When I was young and worked at my dad's factory we had Kicker's UK factory opposite. Bought a fair bit of stuff direct at trade. Built myself a custom 12” solobaric hardwood enclosure. My dad designed/made custom hardwood double glazed windows/doors so I have all the big commercial woodworking machines to make anything I wanted.. Spent weeks in my own time making it. Had it in the boot for 3 months and car got broken into and it was nicked. Scumbags!

Had a 13 speaker, three amp system in a 1988 MG Metro Turbo when 4 speakers was a lot!

was like a kid in sweet shop back in the late 70's in to the 80's, 90's in my local car audio showroom, loved swapping out radio cassettes for full pull out ones to face off type got a real kick out of it, seem to remember i preferred panasonic in those days, i wasn't and still not in to actual sound quality as it all sounds ok to me, whether out of a high end system or your bog standard stuff

I seem to remember “Sharp” being popular, pioneer speakers too with my £75 budget.

cant remember fitting any sharps, did fit pioneer speakers they were good speakers, fitted a few of these type of equalizers, got quite excited every time i switched it on and watching those led's rising up and and down to the sound of the music, mesmerising and quite distracting especially night driving

I was especially proud of my JBL parcel speakers in a cast frame and subwoofer boxes that filled the boot. what else did we need bootspace for back then?!
