Is there really no alternative not made in China?!
I'd rather go down the used route. My sister runs a bluemotion polo in Italy and even though it is mountain hairpins everywhere she goes she gets 70mpg. Probably no depreciation.

I would guess 80%+ of components for most cars are made in China... so even buying X (British/German etc) means you still feed the Asian market.

You are probably not too far off Peter. BMW stated c50% 3 years ago. I suspect and hope that the % will start to decrease in future.
I am going to check my cars to see if there is data on this. I am quietly confident that the SEC and SL are very German....

That's going to depend a lot on how you chose to count:
Numbers of components: Almost all Chinese I expect (down to the chip level)
Mass of component: Maybe a larger amount of German
Mass of raw material: Where does the steel / aluminium / silicon come from <shrug>

Good point though I suspect 30 years ago that there were not too many components sourced in China. I am not sure if the SEC has too many chips. Whenever I buy parts from Autodoc, I select those made in Germany.

Well, I’ve done it. I’m just back from the Audi dealership having purchased an E-Tron 55 Quattro, which is a fully electric (not hybrid) SUV. I have to say that it’s not a cheap car to buy, but in theory the lower tax, fuel and servicing costs should make it stack up financially.

I intend to report back on this thread from time to time with updates as to what real-World ownership of a fully electric car is actually like. In theory, the range is about 260 miles, but apparently in practice it’s more like 210. Time will tell.

The first hurdle is to have the home charge point installed, and there’s about a 3 week wait on that currently (not allowing for the seasonal hols).

I pick it up next week, so will post some pics then. But as some of you will be expecting, it’s blue! (Galaxy Blue)
Make sure they don't increase the price before the charger is installed

Err...my post was from two years ago! we’ve done something like 20,000 miles in the E-Tron since then, charging it up once or twice a week over that time. And don’t worry, there was no increase in the pod price between ordering and installation back in those days.

interesting read

Read that earlier ………..
The wife’s “mild hybrid” Vitara 1.4 petrol is very efficient and is returning 45mpg around town and so would return more on a run.

hybrids are fine, seems to be saying electric cars cost more than ice cars on long distance

It’s a petrol car with an electric motor to “assist” never actually runs on electric only, small battery charged through regeneration.
