Just opened both up and they both seem identical (and nothing fell out!) What size is the chip I'm looking for? I've never changed either battery since I got the car and only noticed a few months ago when I went to move the car with the spare. If the chip is there would it be possible to reprogram it or would I still need a new key?

Any advice gratefully received!

It looks like a tiny bit of black plastic. About 3mm each side. If the chip is there, yes almost certainly, but never heard of one forgetting, at least on the 4200.

Okay just had a closer look and the keys are not quite identical as you can hopefully see in the photo. The bottom one is the one that works but this has one silver chip as opposed to other which has two black ones? On testing again now the other key does not open the doors/alarm either ( I could have sworn it did before?) The key does fit the locks and ignition though...

The transponder is under the circuit board where the battery is. Which you probably need to change with the one that doesn't work on the alarm etc either.

There is a learn process for the remote lock though....

Cheers Catman.

So taken some photos of the other side and the case and I assume the black plastic in the corner of the case is the transponder so is present in both. There is a suspicious solder mark on the back of the one circuit board though (the one that doesn't work)?? Think I will try to reprogram this key and see if can get it to set the alarm etc. After all that though it could be the battery is just knackered!!!!

Yes thats correct. Unless its a trick of the light then your transponder chip looks like it has some black gunk or tape holding it in place. I suppose its possible if it is that is being shielded. You could test if needed by removing the chip from the key. Put the key in the ignition barrel and then either hold the chip against the metal part of the barrel or use some tape to hold it as a temp measure.

If your car then starts using that key then something is shielding the chip when its in the key.

The transponder is a passive system and should get through the plastic and glue without problem but the range from the ingnition barrel will only be a few cms. Its unlikely that it has lost the code and there is nothing really to go wrong inside the chip.

Is it possible that a previous owner has lost a key and bought a 2nd hand one and put a new blade in it but never had it programmed ?

I wouldnt worry about the suspicious looking solder. If it opens the boot and doors and switches off the alarm by clicking the buttons then the electronics are working. The micro switches are prone to failing but easily replaced and are pence to buy.

If everything else on the key works and the range test i suggested above doesnt work then the only options are

1. Reprogramme the transponder as it has the wrong code.
2. The transponder is fubar. Ive never heard of one failing but you never know.

Worst case scenario. If the transponder is dud then buy a second hand key and take the transponder out of the 2nd hand key. Put that in your and then have it programmed to your car.

I think its more likely its been a replacement key thats never been programmed to the car.

What he said, in all respects.

Get a new battery in. See of the doors work. If not, we can do the self learn thing.

Then get it to a dealer to get the car set for the transponder.

Cheers guys - will replace the battery first and go from there. No idea if previous owner/s replaced any keys - will check the paperwork but always possible...

Phosphor Bronze in Alton, Hants just down the A31 from Farnham.

High end chrome platers but not cheap. £250 I would recon.
