Importing a Car from the US

Not sure I’ve mentioned it before but it pops out of 3rd on overrun. Going to try and get a camera into the box through the fill hole. Been racking my brains to work out why and hoping I’ve not clocked the synchro slider so it’s not engaging the three detents. They’re lightweight sliders with only half the teeth. Synchro slider is on correctly. I’ve adjusted the linkage from scratch and removed the gaiter so will give it a go and see if anything has changed.

Popped to Tesco to get milk first thing and it still pops out of 3rd. Might be regretting not fitting a removable gearbox crossmember soon!

Now to see what's going on then Tim.

Can’t find anything. I’ve rebuilt probably a hundred gearboxes and there’s always something that looks really knackered or there’s loads of play when the jump out of gear. I can’t find anything.

Must be something simple then mate if everything looks fine.

I'm no expert but popping out of gear is often seen when the synchro dog teeth get chipped or the edge taken off them through aggressive gear shifting. The damage to the dog teeth can be miniscule.

Yep, but it’s all new and there’s no damage from the very few miles it has done. I’ll strip the mainshaft itself later and see if there’s anything amiss there.

Detent springs weak, or wrong size detents?

You don’t have detents in a Muncie, there’s friction between the sliders and the sprung struts and there’s combs that hold the shift forks. Can’t see any issue with them at the moment

I was always told in these situations to walk away from it for a while Tim.

I have. To be honest they’re so easy to strip, its taken me 1 hour. I’ve been wandering round Bromsgrove all day while the Ms did a school stall thingy.

I’ve sent an email to the manufacturer as they’re parts book says one part number and they sent me a different one. Could be a typo????

Company got back to me and they’ve updated their catalogue so nothing wrong there. They’ve recommend I change the shift combs and put a stronger spring on them.
