How can it have done that with no slip?

C

Because it’s only sitting on a couple of very small spots they’ll have got very hot without any more than the usual slip when you feather the clutch. The things is I don’t know why. Must be related to the gearbox issue. I will get a dial gauge on the bellhousing to see how it’s related to the crank but I did do that in the first place and it was ok

Well good luck. It's fascinating to watch and I think the car looks fab

Dial gauge out at lunch and the bellhousing centralisation is within 2 thou and perpendicular 4 thou. So it’s not that.

The input shaft bearing is now worn too.

It’s been suggested that the clutch isn’t up to the power and that’s causing the problems but it’s supposed to be good for 630ftlb.

Bolted the gearbox up to the engine after work. without the clutch on so I can get at the input shaft.

There’s no play in the input shaft at all. So I pulled the output yoke off and there’s definite play in the mainshaft. Takes a bit of force to move it probably because the centre bearing is new and wasn’t evident without the box on the engine as I would have been moving the whole box. Fingers crossed that’s the gearbox issue. The bearing surface doesn’t look worn but it obviously moving in the input shaft. Ordered a new mainshaft, bearing and main/input rollers.

I got the torque rating of the clutch wrong it’s over 700ftlbs so no way it’s not man enough. Clutch wise I’m going for operator error at the mo, maybe not bedded in properly and a bit too much clutch slip. There’s no high spots and a lot of the visible bits seems to be impacted friction material. So going to clean it up and fit a ceramic paddle plate and see how it goes.

Serious admiration for all the work you’re putting in - engine in engine out gearbox off gearbox on etc etc!

Yeah, complete clucker!

I’ve also ordered a couple of torque lock synchro sliders. If they’re a nice fit I’ll use them instead of my super duper Italian made lightweight ones. They’re supposed to increase wear as they’re tapered but they do provide a positive locking action, I’m not sure but really don’t want another box out effort, a gasket set is £45 by itself.

Went to put a new bearing in the mid plate and there’s some axial play, tilt and it’s free to spin. Not a huge amount and nor enough I’d have thought to cause an issue but maybe all the little things add up so I’ve ordered a new one.

Fairplay mate it's never ending.
Hope Mrs Oneball likes the smell of gear oil as I bet it over powers the Old Spice by now :)

Yep, with hindsight it’d have been easier to buy a new box at the beginning. Still not really sure why it’s popping out. I’ve built loads of boxes both for me and others. And they’re really tolerant of being utterly *******.

Ms is probably nearer you, she’s at her folks for the week in Deal.

Having done some reading it would seem that there are some gears that will only work with torque lock style sliders. They have a back cut on the dog teeth, I can’t see it in mine but maybe it’s only slight. So torque lock sliders going in. New clutch and midplate are here now. 104107104108

Old pilot bearing out which took some effort

Gearbox back together, waiting to put the side cover on after I’ve welded and filed the shift levers to be a perfect fit on the keyed shaft.
