I had a look at the figures on this website last night and they dont seem accurate to me. Does anyone know how they get their data, the only true and accurate method would be direct from the DVLA database for mot/taxed cars.

Thats interesting! What a great idea.

The GS numebers are interesting..... 103 spyders! Thats definitely wrong, but all up, 16 MCV's, 65 GS, 142 GS Coupes and 103 Spyders is maybe not far off the mark - but I still think its around 50 cars short. Perhaps thats the number that have been written off/exported?

Either way, interesting link, thanks.

Well, had a look deeper and it does appear it should be accurate and it even includes SORN vehicles but it still does not add up to me:

Which cars are in the database?

The database covers all vehicles that have a valid tax disc or a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). It doesn't cover cars that were off the road prior to the introduction of SORN, or cars that have never been registered on the road since manufacture.

If you can't find your car, it doesn't mean that the DVLA thinks it doesn't exist!

Most vehicles are listed under the make and model recorded on their V5 documents. In some cases though, the make and model name isn't properly recorded and the the vehicle will be counted under one of the following alternative categories:

  • Another similar model from the same manufacturer.
eg. The author's Subaru Legacy GT-B is counted as a Subaru Legacy, because the GT-B is a Japanese model that was never sold in the UK.
  • The 'Missing' model from the same manufacturer.
eg. A Bugatti Veyron is counted as a 'Bugatti - Missing', because the Veyron model hasn't been registered on the DVLA database.
  • An 'Other' make and model.
eg. A Pagani Zonda is counted as an 'Other Italian - Missing', because the Pagani make hasn't been registered on the DVLA database.

It seems like the Opels would form part of the Opel Missing stats Matt? It returns 6k Opels that are incorrectly identified in the V5.

Yep, I've seen a few for sale that show as that too, mainly 2006 cars. If you do the first stage of an HPI check (the free bit! :) ) they come up as Spyders.

Having done a FOI from the DVLA a while back, I'm not that confident about the data accuracy. Its not bad, by any means, but its not great.

On another forum, someone put in "enzo" and the database came up with only one registered on the road.

Clearly wrong. I myself had seen two in the previous week. Obviously, there are quite a few around.

:)

Apparently there are only 2 Fizzies left????

One of those is in my garage and the other one managed to split itself into 50+ for their last Southend meet!

(Adam - it is a Yamaha FS1-E a moped from the 1970's of ledgendary proportions)

As it says in the about section of the web site, many cars are incorrectly identified on the V5, hence the data is not accurate for every model, if you look at Ferarri you'll see there are 3200 listed as Ferrari missing and another 89 listed as unknown model, your missing Enzo's obviously fall into these categories.

Anyone had further thoughts on this list?

As and from last month, all cars need to be insured whethered SORNed or not, will this lead to a more correct list next year or is it fatally flawed?

....it got lost in translation across the Irish sea Nick......;)...but either way....more cars being recorded as viable entities.....or on the road....so will give a better idea of what is left/missing?
