Two things I remember clearly from taking my motorbike test and subsequent advanced riding lessons:

  1. Everyone is trying to kill you. Ride accordingly
  2. What the **** use is it to be in the right if you're lying in the road with a broken leg.
Cyclists should adopt the same mindset.

I recall those lessons well

I got clobbered by a woman in a Range Rover at the weekend whilst crossing the road. Just her wing mirror fortunately. I was 3/4 of the way across when she pulled out of a side road, fortunately I saw her and stopped otherwise I’d have been under the car.

She stopped and got out, thought she was going to check I was ok. But no she started giving me a load of abuse how I’d scared her child!

I said to her did you not look as you pulled out of the give way and she replied “you only have to give way to cars”!!!

I know that us walkers now have priority... but for the life of me (no pun intended) I have no intention to cross any junction before ensuring the path is clear of approaching/turning cars and I will not be arguing the point as being under a car is an experience I do not want to try.

I anticipate there will be a lot more accidents once pedestrians and cyclist start to make use of their new 'powers'

And then ensues the barrage of insurance scammers and backed by no win no fee ambulance chasers…

She wasn’t waiting at the junction or even in sight when I started to cross the road and you can see 50y up the road she came out of. I wasn’t using any “powers” it’s just common sense not to kill people ffs.

And a few of the more sanctimonious ones also getting chinned!

I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time until a motorist gets out of his car with that intention with me, and ends up with a right hook on his button!

So many are big and brave whilst protected in their cars but not so brave when face to face!

Not a dig at you... general comments on how daft these new rules are

I look forward to someone trying to do that to me!

Cycle lanes aren't used (by me) for a number of reasons.

  1. They're often shared with pedestrians with kids and people walking their dog. The last thing they want is a load of cyclists hurtling towards them at 25-30mph!
  2. They're always filled with litter and rubbish and glass meaning that you put your life in your own hands should you choose to use them.
  3. Doing 30 on a road is keeping up with traffic anyway so where's the issue?
  4. Vehicles generally park in them rendering them pointless.

May as well get rid of the cycle lanes then and give more room to cyclists and vehicles on the roads again then.

Perhaps the pedestrians should walk in the road instead of the designated pavements instead. No point in having something that people choose to ignore its purpose.

Pretty sure the pot holes in the roads will cause more damage and risk of a cyclist having an accident either by swerving to avoid it or busting a wheel and coming off the bike than some litter on a cycle path.

The answer to this is so much easier than the rules which have been introduced.

We do like a number of countries in Europe have.

If there is a collision between a cyclist and a vehicle, the onus is on the driver of the vehicle to prove their innocence. If they can't it's their fault. Simple as that.

This may seen harsh, but what it does do is make motorists more vigilant of their surroundings.
What it also does is punish the dick head cyclists who cut drivers up and weave in and out of cars in traffic (much like motorbikes) and are generally a pain in the ar5e who don't abide by the rules.
If they get hit by a car riding like a dick. It's their fault. Problem solved.

I'm not going to defend all cyclists as there are some complete bell ends out there on a bike, but lets be fair there are far more bell ends driving cars, van, lorries, buses etc on our roads.

Im sure there will be a crossover of bell ends that go out on their bikes that also drive their trucks and cars like bell ends.

Im not in the slightest anti cyclist. Just anti bell end driver cyclist or pedistrian.

I do think that it should now be manditory to have cyclist insurance.

At the weekend I came across a group of 14 cyclists from a local club (matching outfits), they were causing a holdup on the 60mph section of the road and were in my opinion, doing it deliberately.

Anyway, I passed safely and drove to the next town, parked up and became a pedestrian :p

When they caught up and rode into town, I was waiting at a flat top speed hump that drivers locally treat as a zebra crossing (it’s 20mins zone) and alway give way to pedestrians, even before any new rules.

Ithen stepped into the road and caused mayhem as despite being able to see me from at least 50 yards as they approached, they did not intend to give way.

Lots of shouting and swearing and wobbles as they unclipped and steadied themselves.

I calmly reminded them of the new Highway Code and the fact we can all play games o_O

And yes I am sure one of them would have loved to have punched me, I was happy to take one on the chin if it came to it.

Brilliant! I wish I’d been there to see that.
