Apple MacBook is about as good as it gets, but I am a little bias. I work and play on MAC OSX (the operating system) and you cant beat it. It will also boot in Windows 7 if you want it to.

Mac OSX is very easy to use and just works, but you pay for it.

If you can only stretch to a PC, steer clear of Dell and all the big boys, HP, Tosh etc, with the exception of Sony, they are very good.

Look Acer, they are a good budget make.

You will be hard pushed to beat these guys, but the budget ranges are a bit cheap feeling, so would advise to go mid to upper:

This ticks all the boxes:

I'd disagree with Conaero ( sorry) and go for a Dell. Very reliable, well put together. I'm an I.C.T. teacher so know a bit, and a couple of mates in IT swear by them. Bought another one last week £379 - great value. HP are useless so steer clear. I don't know about all brands but thought I'd share what I do know.

I use Sony Vaio, well made and not as clunky as some, you pay a bit more but we're all used to that on here!

If you don't want to spend as much then go for an Acer - just make sure it's running Windows 7 (64 bit) and have 4GB (ideally 6) of RAM or more...

I have a Vaio already altho its never let me down , the casing is now cracking and splitting in several places , mind you its 4 years old now , but i dont think it should be doing this .one reason im opposed to another Vaio

Loz, Apple every time. I'm not a techno fan but I do find Apple products are fantastic. I've got an i-mac, a Macbook pro and an i-phone. You switch them on and they work. They don't seem to slow down or go wrong. No virus problems. They are what all computers should be. I was told there are two types of people; those with Macs and those that will end up with Macs, eventually! And no, I am not on commission from Apple!

Loz what you have to remember is that if you use a laptop for email, surfing the net, and using Microsoft office, then you will be fine, no difference and your life will become significantly easier. If however, you use PC specific software for work etc, you will probably find that those applications are not available on the MAC. You can install windows straight onto a Mac and run it as a normal PC, running all your existing software as normal.

This is known as dual boot. When you turn the computer on, it will boot in to either Mac or Windows, depending upon what you have selected as you preferred system. Alternatively, you just hold down the ALT key on boot and it gives you a menu where you can select which operating system you would like.

If you pop round during work hours, Ill set it all up for you and have all the software you need here in the office.

I5 yes Loz. Check out www.cancomuk.com they are pretty much the cheapest you will get.

I have a 15 MacBook pro, cost me £1500 or so a couple of years back but it runs just as fast and just as reliable as any new Laptop and will continue to do do for anther 5 years.

The MacBook is about £850 and only comes with 13.3" screen which is decent, but I wanted the 15" so had to go for the MacBook Pro. They also do a 17" but that's mahoosive!!!!

Hi Loz,

Another vote for Apple from me, have had Sony Vaio x 2 (both rubbish) and various others and nothing comes close.

I used to earn a bit of money setting up and maintaining people's Apples so if you want it set up closer to home then let me know.

Regards,

Robin
