Morning ,

Can anyone point me in the right direction for removal of the three heater control knobs on a 3200 , I have a feeling they just pull off, but didn't want to risk mutilation !

I think one of the illuminations bulbs has blown.

Thanks

If it's anything like the Gransport, which has very similar looking heater controls, there will be two screws at the bottom of the trim and two pins that clip into spring clips at the top. Undo the two screws, remove the radio then gently pull off the trim. The heater control is attached to the back of the trim and comes out with it. On the back of the heater control are three bulb holders that twist out. Can't guarantee it the same on a 3200 though!

What screws? mine (3200gt m) has the carbon trim too but I can't see any visible fixings at all. Heater system is going nuts, heated rear window switches on of its own accord and heater seems to be on full blast whaterver I do. Nice noise with the window down but not in the rain and then I can't get it to demist. Prodding the outer dials, and/or the carbon trim, or rocking the control knobs leads to random change of settings so I'm guessing a bad connection/earth + I only have one dial illuminated....... and it had been going so well recently, for the fist tme in about 3 years no dash lights illuminated. Door locks having a bit of an indecision session too, I can live with manual locking but not being broiled alive.

I had this problem on my GS. Every time I hit a bump the rear screen heater would come on, or the fan would change from econ to recirc. It blew hot when set to cold as well. It would also do it when you pushed the heater surround just as you describe. Anyway, I got the heater control out and opened it up and found that the solder had come away from the circuit board on one of the "legs" of the right hand potentiometer. I quick dab with a soldering and all was fixed. I don't know where the screws are on a manual but I'd guess they are under the gear lever gator. By the way, don't just pull the heater control knobs off from the front - they have tiny springs behind them that will fly all over the place if you do. Once you have removed the heater panel you can safely remove the control knobs from behind.
Good luck!

Put a thread in here with a how to, it's dead easy. Pulling the knobs off like in the top picture is the wrong way, much easier to remove the whole centre console to access the PCB and heater control. How did you manage to fix the bulb Saint Etienne?

Screws are located in the radio aperture.
My 3200 had erratic temp control & it was a dry joint on the board too.
Bulbs are the miniature cap less

Spot on, to remove you remove radio first, then unscrew two screws, then carefully with a flat head driver pop out the two brass retaining clips which are at the top of the console. You will hear a click as the pop out. Put a cloth over the screwdriver head so as not to mark the leather surround.

Once the console is loose you can unplug the plugs off the back of each control unit.

Just had a look at my old unit and the bulbs are very much soldered onto the Pcb as shown in the pics below. I cannot find a way of popping the bulbs out of the holder!

Many thanks for the advice. Will have a go today assuming the keys I bought to remove the original becker CR do the job. Never used the CR though, havent even bothered to input the code since I bought it over 4 years ago preferring the v8 soundtrack.

Yes let me know if they do work Andy because I have to tackle doing the sticky buttons on our new Auto and will have to remove the Becker unit too!

Hi the CR keys worked OK - I bought generic "European" ones from Halfrauds £5 . Having removed the CR I have then spent several hours trying to find and remove the clips that hold the console in at the top /sides of the heater controls. All I have succeeded in doing is scratch the carbon fibre. Any ides?

Yes as I said, I have the carbon too.

First of all you remove the two screws which are inside the console unit. Get a torch and shine it into the radio area. They are exactly in the middle of the radio slot side area.

Then once these two screw are out insert a very flat screwdriver with a cloth over the tip into the area about half way at the heigth of the heater controls and lever it outwards until you hear a click.

Let me get you some pics!

Hi Phil

thanks for the photos

I got the screws out fine but just couldnt get the screwdriver under the lip of the console surround to be able to exert any leverage hence the scratch because the Screwdriver was not engaged under the lip of the console and skidded accross the surface of it. I'm worried as it's chewing away at the adge of the C fibre of the console as I try and get the blade underneath...maybe mine is just a very tight fit? hmmm I'll try again with a much blunter flat blade driver..or a fork handle or something.

Ok try this, get your hand into the empty radio recess and from behind the panel push in order to force it out at the same time as getting someone to try at the top with a screwdriver with a rag over the tip so as not to damage the carbon fibre console!

On the back of the heater control are three bulb holders that twist out

Can someone confirm that the three bulbholders can be removed by twisting, which is -I assume- a rotating movement?

Furthermore, I would be very interested if someone could point me to the correct specifications of the bulbs (preferrably a link), so that I can order them prior to removing the control unit.

Thanks!
