Typical newspaper reporting.
Regarding classic cars if you want zero car tax/no MOT you have to send off your V5 to be reclassified as historic.
Who wouldn't want zero car tax?
By default you can then have black and white number plates if your car couldn't before.
Oh but the newspaper makes out you have to apply for using black and white number plates, yes true, but not just for the plates!
Personally I hate the 3D raised letter numberplates.
Pull me over please I'm a chav.
Sorry to anyone who has them!

"The DVLA said: “The agency has not seen any evidence to show that number plates displaying raised plastic, acrylic or Perspex lettering (3D/4D plates) are able to meet the requirements of either the current or new British Standard.”

Looks like they really want to clamp down on this now

"Number plate offenders could soon be issued penalty points in a bid to crack down on an existing loophole which drivers get away with just a simple fine. Non-compliant plates are also being challenged as part of the new legislation which could affect thousands of road users."

How is this a safety issue?
Seems like a new source of revenue to me. Same as over here.

The DVLA will auction a plate which makes daft money if you mis-space the characters to make a name then fine you for doing it

If they're going to start enforcing it then all plates should be one price , as long as ANPR can read it what does it matter

I don't agree with the pricing, surely supply and demand dictates price, but I do think you shouldn't misplace them either, if it means something as is, then fair enough, but to muck about with it is wrong. So they should be priced taking that into account, maybe we will see some form of price correction.

There are loads up for auction that are obviously going to be spaced incorrectly or why would somebody be bidding £5k plus

Though what anyone would want this I have no idea :D

Risky bidding 10k on a plate that could be worthless , are they planning on enforcing it by ANPR camera or will it still be a copper thinking ello ello ello what's going on there then

I assume the cameras can detect whether the characters are spaced correctly

That's part of the problem, if the ANPR can't read the plate, how do you trace down the owner.....

If they're standard sized letters and numbers on proper reflective plates but not spaced correctly I'd be amazed if ANPR cameras can't read them

I saw a range rover last week , very feint letters on a non reflective background with illegally tinted front windows

That's what needs cracking down on , not SUS4N how long has he/she been driving round like that , how many cop cars has he passed

Just yesterday I had a cop car behind me , saw an electric scooter on the path doing 15-20mph , they don't care , he rode straight past them , they barely even gave it a glance

If it's being done by camera SUS44N is getting a ticket and the illegable ones can carry on as before

i have an ANPR camera fitted on a gated commercial site, you'll be amazed how many foreign workers (not in my employ i should add) drive around with illegal non reflective plates on UK cars, caught a number of them especially when reviewing night footage, the plate just comes up completely white, must be loads that police cant trace when snapped by fixed cameras

Exactly , it's not as if they're inconspicuous, they stand out as being illegal but nobody cares

I have illegally spaced and slightly altered letter on two of my cars and my son has something similar.
I have friend in the police who drove past the cars and all got correctly picked up on ANPR. Never been pulled and even not even mentioned when I have been pulled for speeding, so for me that a victimless crime.
Had a more modified plate on my DB7 which could it be read and got pulled twice in a month, so reconfigured to standard.

i think the non reflective plates tend to look like normal plates from a distance, it's only when a photo is taken that it becomes clear it's an illegal non reflective plate

Police should be clamping down on more serious offences, just been to shop, young chap next to me with a six-pack of Stella, no ID, girl refused to serve him. Outside in car park there's three of them, parked next to me, one of them so pisssed he could hardly walk. Dunno about the driver sure he must have been drinking but he was stable, talking about trying another shop. Pisssed up lad nearly fell against my car twice and if he had he'd have got what for.

All in a 67 plate car and having n ID I'd assume under 21, all looked more 17/18....
