Hi,

Does anyone have any experiences of using Venture shield or similar films to protect their paintwork? I'm considering applying it to the front bumper of a 4200 and I'm concerned it will be quite noticeable, particularly around the edge's when the car's a little dirty...

Hi Taliesyn, You could PM Matt at D2detail (He's a forum member and sponsor). He's fitted quite a few protective films and will be able to give you some pointers I'm sure.

Had some on an elise. Never got to peel it back to see if it did the job it was supposed to do. It is noticeable - I'd say from a couple of feet away and on mine it was on sill area. Probably even more noticeable on the nose of a car. Biggest problems are it doesn't take a polish like the paintwork and the edges do tend to go a bit dark.

Never fitted it myself so cant comment on that.

I had it fitted to mine after 2 bumper resprays. The guy did a good job although I can see one mark underneath.
If the job was perfect you can still notice it's there by the edges. When the car is waxed you can be sure you'll see some dry at an edge. This can be removed with a soft brush or your nail in a cloth. So it's a different way to care for the bodywork.
I'm also concerned that when it's eventually removed there'll be lines where the edges were.
Overalll I thiink that it looks better than a moderately chipped bumper.

I don't like it if I am honest. I appreciate the job it does but would rather put the money in a pot towards repainting it.

I like the look of the Chipex system, but am just worried it I would be disappointed with the finish, but saying that, its better than having white primer spots showing through.

What the problem with the traditional method of touching in chips is that you either fill the chip too much or too little and this is not flat and catches the light. One way of doing this is to colour sand afterwards.

Ok, its a brave man who takes 3000 grit wet and dry to his pride and joy but this is the way to make it perfect.

If you dont fancy doing it yourself, get a detailer to do it for you. He should charge you about £100 so do the front end and polish.

Hi James,

I just checked out the website. it looks impressive. Look forward to seeing your pics and your opinion after you've given it a test.

Chipex. It can't be as easy as it shows in the video. I'm keen to hear the results James.

Cool - they even list my colour under the QP list for some reason.

I guess this is just very soft and thick paint with a two stage polishing process. I've done similar with other cars, clean the area with IPA, wax the area close to (but not over) the chip, bring deep holes up with some high build primer, airbrush on the paint, t-cut it back a bit, add airbrush lacquer layer, polish using a DA, cut out any overspray with clay bar and re-wax. Worked really well about 90% of the time and doesnt take as long as it sounds.

Dont think I have the cahones to try it on a car thats actually worth something though!

The correct film fitted properly looks awesome, you can polish it and you can even colour sand (wet flat) some to get rid of the orange peel that is given when wrapped. Give me a call and I will talk you through what can be done,
It does not leave marks when removed, it is self heeling if scratched, the demonstration is to rub it with a wire brush! The film the looks destroyed, boil the kettle, poor it over the film and it self heels! Awesome stuff

You should get a job selling it!

Lotus dealer: It's got venture shield on, factory fitted.
Me: Whats that do then?
Dealer: erm, it shields the paint?
Me: where is it?
Dealer: Oh lots of places.

Mine looked pretty **** if I'm honest, never took a polish well and did suffer from orange peel. Wish I'd known the above when I had it, especially the kettle bit. However it LOOKED to be doing it's job.

Do you think it could cover the nose of a GS with it being invisible, Matt, no edges showing? PM me a price estimate?

Sounds good, will have to look in to that at some point, hopefully will stop Lady Stig tapping things and scratching the paint.
