GTS engine catastrophe

That is not good...………..is it worth contacting Maserati? You never know they might contribute? I had a Saab with full Saab service history but no warranty....when they discovered I needed a new engine at 50,000 miles, they paid for 905 of it because "Saab engines don't fail after 50,000 miles". My next 3 cars were all Saabs!

Sorry to hear this. I'd definitely want to speak to the garage who serviced this and ask about the sealant!
The last service was routine oil and filter change, plus brake pads and tyres and wipers, nothing to suggest they did any work on the engine that would require sealant?

During routine servicing it's only little dabs of sealant needed on changing the valve cover gaskets where they go over the joins of the front timing cover.

That's a heart-warming story for sure. I had an Audi cambelt go once - I was surprised when the Audi dealership said 'no charge' because even though the car had done about 70k miles it had a full service history with correct cambelt changes so Audi picked up the £1200 bill. Worth a try with Maserati I guess - thanks for the suggestion.

Worth seeing if the rocker covers had been off and on, and a generous amount of sealant applied?

Bloody ****. That's bizarre, and rare for these usually bullet-proof engines. Mind you, I suppose you can't blame the engine if someone had OD'd it on sealant and a sticker (a sticker! That's almost surreal).

At least it's somewhere you can trust that won't fleece you and has your best interests at heart.

So possibly there's a chance they were over-enthusiastic with the valve cover gaskets sealant. Or the sump nut washer sealant maybe? Is that possible that something as simple as too much sealant in a routine service could wreck an engine?

Need to see pictures to make an opinion but never put any on the sump plug.
I'm guessing in your history the rocker covers have been done as when I worked for the Dealer next to clutches they kept us busy.

Ashley says he always removes the sticker in case it becomes detached. But Maserati don't during car build.

Very sad news, but reading your story i already was afraid that this could get expensive.
Hope you find a good engine for a reasonable price.
Sealer in the oil sump....some “technician” never learn.
That sticker though...that is a bad thing that could occur more often then?!

I should point out that the car was fine for quite a long time after services. Service history is Graypaul at 6600m, 15410m and 26,894m (just before I took delivery 2 years 8 months ago) then Barr-Tech at 31,275 last September. I only have details of the last two, both routine services. So the engine ran faultlessly from 26,894 miles to approx 31,275 - about 4,380 miles - when it was last serviced, then did over 1000 more miles before developing worrying noises.

thanks very much - yes I'm hopeful we can find a good replacment. Yes you might think the sticker problem would be more common, but since the consensus is that this kind of massive failure is a rare event I can only guess it isn't usually a problem, fortunately. One of those probabilities that have a low chance of happening but if they do can be catastrophic, perhaps?
