GT not the next step?

A couple of members have retro-fitted GS side skirts to 4200s and even 3200s, so I can't see how it couldn't go the other way. 4200 skirts would also be easier to acquire and significantly cheaper.

Thinking about this some more - the facelift 4200 has the GS front and back bumpers along with the 4200 skirts - take a look at one of them to see if you like the look - job done!

I own a facelift 4200. :)

OK, I'm going to say it; I think that the flared side sills on the GS look really silly and they totally put me off buying one.

I agree. I can't understand why anyone would want to spoil a 4200 by retro fitting GS sills. You could always fit standard 4200 sills and sell the GS ones for upwards of a grand. That might sweeten the finances a bit.

Personally I can't see how they are, but they do seem to command more money for whatever reason. A late 4200 facelift is a lot lower cost and is close to being the same car apart from a few bits of trim and I think about 5hp more due to slightly different exhaust manifold IMO.

Ben, as you know I have had a 3200, a GS and a GTS currently.

You really, really need to test drive the GTS MC Shift before you make a final decision.

I love mine but will be going back to a GS at some point as I believe it to be the most rounded and accomplished car for the money that Maserati have produced in the past 20 years. It also makes economical sense as the GS has hit its floor, or very nearly hit it anyway.

The GTS is a big, fast, luxurious GT car, if I am honest, it is too big really and hence I see myself settling with a GS in the stable for the future, with no ambition of selling it. The GTS is fantastic, better than the GS in a some ways and a car I am glad I own/ed.

The only car I have not had is the 4200 and TBH, I always found it very watered down aesthetically but they are very popular and have their fans and very good cars from what I have been told.

So go drive a GTS MC Shift, then make your mind up.

Never driven a Vantage but the 4200 is a very average drive even with the 05MY mods.

I have and thought the 3x cost over my 2003 [at the time] 4200 offered the same bang for 1/3 of the price, and it had room for 4 and better boot space...just as a good GT should.

Same journey as me. 4200 (well two of them) to GS having dabbled with the thought of GT or GTS.

Bang for buck went for the GS and will hang on to it.

Seems I'm in good company here - lots of people with similar thoughts and challenges on where to go next. I do think I should drive a GS - just to see for myself whether it's really much different other than cosmetically. And Matt I think you're probably spot on on the MC Shift. While the GTS Auto did make some nice noise, it wasn't really that exciting, and I do remember the surprise when I first heard yours start up. Then my further surprise to find out that that noise was from a stock exhaust. Perhaps that additional noise, along with the suspension and gearbox differences will put it on a par with the 4200/GS in terms of excitement and driving involvement for me. We shall see!

I do agree with the earlier posts though - if you want something really good to drive then in my book you buy a 911 and nothing else (or perhaps an M3). But neither have the cachet of the Maz brand. And I was always very put off the 911 by the image I think they portray. While many drive them because they're basically the best car to drive, others seem to buy them for pose value and that in my opinion has tarnished the brand hugely.

So.. the quandry remains - what to do next. Obviously drive a GS and an MC-Shift - both will be fun experiences if nothing else. Then what...? What smallish genuine 4 seater can I get which has supercar performance, great looks, and an image which (I think) says "he really likes his cars" rather than "w**ker with too much money"! That's really a rhetorical question as I don't think there is anything quite right out there at the moment. Perhaps I just ditch the kids and go for a 2 seater - so many more options! Perhaps an M3 for daily fun and keep the 4200 as a weekend car. Hmm.. yes, that might do. But will my wife allow me to have 3 cars on the driveway (we have a family A6 as well)...

The real answer is for Maserati to develop a proper replacement for the GS at some point. Clearly they'd sell at least a half dozen to members of the forum. That's got to be worth the development costs hasn't it?!

Swap the A6 for a QP and also buy a GS. Best of both worlds and 2 awesome cars for the price of a GTS.....

I accept that an MC Shift car is probably best for you but bear in mind that there are no suspension differences between a GTS Auto and a GTS MC if both have skyhook. Also did you try the auto in sport and get the revs going to hear the exhaust?
