Hi Peter,
I have found a very good hand car wash service, that has none of the items you mention, apart from the blades which they all seem to use. I admit most are pretty grim that I have watched, but these are way better than the rest. I watched how they washed cars first and what they were using, I asked them questions and then let them wash one of our cars, the results were very good. Apart from the blades which I will mention, I am constantly watching what they get up to. For example I hate anyone using a spong at the bottom of the car and then going up to such as the roof. It is my opinion, but if you find a good one, the times that you need them are worth the visit.
Cheers

You should try Matt at Shiltech, I think he is close to you, he did Miles's MC GS, only heard good things.

Matt did a one day paint correction on my car (4200) a couple of weeks ago. I am very impressed. He got rid of all the minor scratches and cleaned the engine bay. In addition, he straightened floor mats, and cleaned the carpets, which was above the level of service we had agreed. The depth of shine improved drastically. Highly recommended.

I used to be a great fan of professional car detailing but now i am not too sure.

I have had my GS professional detailed twice in 2 years. Not cheap at £400 per go.
The results are always fantastic initally, but, and its a big but, unless you are prepared to religiously hand wash EVERY time using the two buskets technique, lambswool mit, super soft drying towel, etc etc the dreaded swirls will be back within a couple of months. Fact. Particualry on a black car. Its so depressing ! "Polish" hand car washes must be avoided, the drying blades are an absolute killer

Regretably I have decided that it is impossible for me to keep up with the level of car washing discipline required to maintain the intial lustre so I now regulary use swirl "filling" type products such as Poorboys Black Hole Glaze. One application and the swirls are filled and disappear in front to your eyes.

I was speaking to someone about this just last week, saying that I think AutoGlym products were good. I know they have some mild 'filler' in them, but I like the beading and think they make the car look nice.

I DO use two buckets and nice cloths, but still, am not sure about the whole detailing thing. I think knowingly taking a layer of laquer off can only lead to bad things, long term. Maybe getting the car totally buffed, taken back and re-laquered is the way? :)

Like any cosmetic "surgery"...it only lasts a certain length of time.......but more than useful when attending a big event or selling on......

I have to get my 4200 detailed in the not too distant future. Clay Barred first, then Ant-Swirl, then at least 2 coats of Wax, usually looks brilliant and only for around £250 at my local body shop. I need to get a bit of spray work done first though to get her spot on, then the detail.

Fact of the matter is every time a car's paint is corrected, it removes some of the paint. So products with filler are the only alternative. I use Prima Amigo and Autoglym SRP to achieve a swirl free finish as my car is a daily driver and I'm not precious about it. New technology means there are great products out there that are easy to apply, relatively long lasting and provide great bang for the dollar.
