Banning elephant racin is a good idea, a major cause of bunching etc. Just watched the documentary, some shocking images.

The Panorama program this evening was an eye opener, message is to stay out of either the dynamic hard shoulder or lane 1 if you want to live!

My daughter got a flat tyre on a smart motorway - late in the evening a pouring with rain, she called me hands free to ask what to do.
I told her slow down but keep driving to the next exit, pull off and call the AA.
Meanwhile I searched Ebay for a replacement wheel as I knew it would be knackered.
Can’t put a price on keep safe.
That was also the advice on the Panorama program this evening so you made the right call.

I was also taught this, only undertake if the other vehicle starts to indicate right. I had someone flash me today as I would not undertake the car in the right lane doing 70.
In Ireland we have these weird continuation lanes, like a separate lane for if you're joining and coming off on next exit, no need to merge ongoing traffic - M50 as far as I know, but basically they are used as official undertaking lanes, so u pass junction, traffic heavy, I'll pretend i'm off next junction, into continuation lane undertake everyone cos u are coming off at next junction but then - oh, changed my mind, I'll come off the one after, rejoin, ad infinitum....

If a majority of people avoided driving in Lane 1 to lower risk potential this it makes an absolute mockery of what they are trying to achieve as Lane 1 will be virtually empty. In which case it might as well be a hard shoulder!

I think we could reinstate the hard shoulders and just discipline/improve drivers to be better more efficient drivers on a motorway and flow would improve. Just improving lane discipline would improve flow massively.

Thanks, as I said the interpretation is incorrect. Undertaking at 70mph is not going to be allowed without a careless driving conviction if caught.

It's still may be prosecuted or could receive a fixed penalty, so we'll agree to differ.

Much of the cause of bunching on fast roads is idiots who constantly brake and accelerate ad nausium; ffs smooth it out and everyone gets to go faster.

If I am in the inside or middle lane and the traffic or cars in the outer lanes are going slower, I continue on (undertake).
What I don’t do is move from behind slow traffic to undertake it .........
Taken this approach for 30 odd years and never been stopped, although technically is probably illegal, I would like to think they would go for those asleep in the other lanes first !

Has anyone managed to visit Autres Directions in France? Sounds like a nice place, and it must be popular. There are signs everywhere!

There's also Rappel must be very well known as there are signs to it on nearly every road but I have never been there

People need to know that 'smart' motorways utilise the hard shoulder which is where most of the accidents then occur when people break down and can't get to a safe area.
These sections of motorway should be renamed No Hard Shoulder or NHS section for short!

I was told it is illegal to undertake in America but if you are caught the police prosecute the guy you were undertaking as he shouldn't have been there!
