Gransport Xenon Headlight Adjustment

Hi Guys,

Well the GS just failed its MOT on a couple of things, including the NSF headlight aim being too low. The garage (my local family owned place) couldn't work out how to adjust as they thought that as the car has Xenon lights that they self adjust. Does anyone know how to manually adjust or have had a similar experience. The other item was a split steering rack gaiter, so not too bad all in all. Mind you I have a clutch to pay for in a couple of weeks plus some new rubber needed soon.

Thanks in advance
Paul

Hi Paul,
I have a xenon headlighted QP, but not sure if the GS adjustment is the same...
On my last MOT, back in march, mine also failed on headlamp aim being too low,
there is an adjuster inside the engine compartment, but my offside one had come disconnected from the headlamp
so adjustment was not possible...my local indie (Grimaldi Engineering in Halstead) sorted this out for me,
they had to take wheel arch trim off to get to the headlamp.
Regards,
Vince.

Even though HID or Xeno lights will compensate for load and pitch they do not fully self adjust.

Each motorised beam needs to be set at the correct level/pitch and track when the car is sitting still on a flat surface. This is done by adjusting the light via a small turn screw at the rear of the motor, this adjusts the pitch/hight.

You do need to remove the front wheel and wheel arch protector to gain full access to the rear of the light unit.

Thanks for your advice chaps, much appreciated.

one thing i would check first is that the self leveling sensor is working and not stuck in a car loaded position, rare that they should be out of sync unless been played with, yes ther is an adjuster behind the wheel arch , requires wheel removal , and removal of the inspection cover , altho access is still difficult far easier removing the 10 screws and removing the whole inner plastic/felt arch , the self leveling sensor is on the rear suspension leg

Mmm, thats interesting as I've just checked the fuse for the levelling system and this seems fine. Also noticed that the headlights with engine running do not move (to adjust to the correct height based upon the level of the car) as I think they used to. The lights have not been touched since the last MOT (3K miles ago), so maybe the self levelling sensor is stuck. I'll take the wheel off (I'm assuming it is on the near side) and check that it isn't covered in **** or similar. The last drive was to Beaulieu Autojumble via a field! Thanks and regards Paul

Yup, should be a main adjuster on the back of the light, its on the top left of this puicture (not xenon) and can be easily accessed/felt through the access panels-could be a bit stiff though (oh err):

There are two adjusters on the suspension, one at the front for acceleration lift, the rear for loads, the adjuster is the small slot above the electric motor, turn clock-wise, ant to adjust the lift/drop.

A quick update. It seems the drivers side headlamp (RH Drive car) is electronically adjusting fine, from the down position when the lights are off to the "up" levelled position depending on the attitude of the car at the time. The passenger side is still sitting in the "down" position so I'm thinking that it must be the motor / mechanism on the LHS not working. I'm going to check all fuses and relays and think I'll be taking the car apart to investigate. If anyone has any brainwaves, I'd welcome any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Can you do a how to pictorial guide for the headlight removal and motor access and fix and bung it in the how to section?

My last car had a faulty lift motor...turned out to be a damaged worm screw.

The HID version would cost over £100, but I found one for manual adjustement for £5 of flea bay, just swapped them over. If I call correctly the motor has a fine setting/adjustment screw on the top of the motor.

I am surmising that the one on the photo, at the top is the main setting one and this may cause your full beam to be adjsted too high.

This is a great thread, I have a similar problem. I bought a Gransport a few months ago and I can't drive it at night because the Xenon's are WAY too high and i get constantly flashed.
My service guy said that they are adjustable but then after looking during the service he said they are not adjustable so I am really not sure where to go from here. I might try having a look at it myself today.

Maserati GranSport Xenon Headlight adjustment fix

Here is the video i made....

This is a video of how I adjusted the Xenon Headlights on a Maserati GranSport. It should also apply to Maserati 4200's with the Xenon option.

The Xenon headlights are self leveling to factor in boot load and hard accelerating and braking but you still need to set the default, normal or base angle for the lights. My lights were WAY too high and were blinding oncoming traffic.

There is 2 adjustment knobs on the back of the headlight's. One for high-beam, one for low/main beam. Turning in one direction lowers the beam, the other direction raises the beam.

Tools used:
* Car Jack
* Socket to remove wheel bolts
* Socket with extension (shown in video) to turn adjustment knobs or possibly a wide Flat head screwdriver
* Phillips head screw driver

Instructions:

* Jack up the car and remove the wheel

* You should see a section on the wheel liner that has Velcro piece that allow you to access the area behind the headlights. You can actually access the headlight adjusting knobs WITHOUT taking off the wheel liner covers. I did this for the second side as i knew where the knobs where. So it may still be easier to remove the wheel liner when you adjust the first light to familiarise yourself and then just use the little Velcro window to adjust the second. You could possibly do it without taking a wheel off as well but i did not try this.

*OK I'll continue with the method i used in the video. Remove the wheel liner cover. There are 4 small hex bolts and 1 small Philips head screw to remove. Remove them. The easiest way to get the liner out was to remove the section towards the back of the car last i found; the reverse for when reinstalling it, put that back section in first.

*Now you have pretty good access to the adjustment knobs on the back of the headlights. If like me you are doing this in daylight outside then you may need to use something like cardboard (video) to see how much you are adjusting the lights. Would be much easier in a garage projecting against the wall or garage door though!

*So just make the adjustments you need and then put everything back together :)

I'm no expert so follow these instruction's at you own risk as I take no liability if you mange to break something on your car!! This video and instruction's simply show how I fixed a problem with my car. Hope it can be of some help :)

Nice one BBB, thanks for the instructions and video. Looks simple enough. Mine are a little low, so I may have a go at this.

Thanks BBB / all, I ran out of time in the end and my car is now in the safe hands of Meridian Modena having a clutch and full geo. I've asked them to also sort the headlamp and suspect a faulty adjuster, buts lets see. Cheers Paul
