GranSport - Lost drive, then re-gained

Chaps,

After a very near trouble free three years and something like 24k of motoring, the GranSport let me down on Friday night.

I havent been using the car that much recently (same happened the last time I hadnt used it, it gave the the only other bit of trouble I've had!) but took it up the M1 Friday. On the way back, traffic was very heavy and as we came to a stop, lane 4 of the M1, the GS lost drive. Warning bleeps from the dash, and the two red lights shown below (suspension and gearbox, I think?).

Whats the consensus with this? Oddly enough, after around 10-12 mins, the warning beeps occurred again and it allowed to carry on, on my way.

I stopped at the services to await the police, and it bleeped again, leaving me unable to select a gear. I don't really like doing it (prefer the error codes to be stored) but I did the batter re-set and it was fine for the remainder of the trip home.

Initial searched point to either F1 relay or possibly low transmission fluids. Before I book it in to get looked at, does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had any experience of this?

Any hints/tips appreciated.

Cheers

Check all connections, earths, battery condition.

If it allowed you to carry on, possibly just an electrical glitch.

I've had the gearbox light and lost drive twice in 2 years.
Both times at relative slow speed (less than 30), and immediately after a sudden unexpected semi emergency brake while in a high gear.
I just put it down to the circumstances confusing the gearbox ecu, ignition off/on and all then okay.
The fact that the suspension light also illuminated, and failure again soon afterwards indicates something a miss, rather than a confused ecu, which I think is what has happened to me.

I had a continuos bleep bleep the other day after a period of no use, but I did not get any other warnings come up..?? It went back to normal after I switched off and parked for a couple of hours, not happened since..??

Sounds like this issue is catching. This is the third person in as many days with this type of fault, myself included.

Mine was (I hope as it's not happened again) was a dying battery and/or loose battery positive terminal piggyback cables.

I didn't get the lights and the suspension light is the one that seems most odd with a gearbox light and makes me think confused electrics. I don't think all this rain and low tmperatures are helping at the mo.

Had it once when on a very spirited drive in the champagne region...came to a stop at a junction and beeeeeep and gearbox light...turned off and then waited for five mins and all ok.

Could that have been the low temperature warning, Robert? Whenever it's happened in my old 3200 or the GS I have a brief moment of panic before realising!

Was thinking that. The most pointless frost 'alarm' of any vehicle I have ever seen.

No Mark, as I mentioned in my initial post, that was the first thing I checked and the temp was 4 degC with no flashing symbol..!! It did not affect the driving, it was just annoying and you think all the time is something suddenly going to go pop, but it was fine after a short rest (a bit like me)..!!

OK, thanks chaps. Interesting opinions....

Bit of a pain that I had to do a battery re-set. Really do not want to be caught short with this again and would have like to be able to plug it in the the brain reader at McGraths, but suspect the re-set will have cleared the codes.

Anyone have any thoughts on it being low transmission fluids? Are they easy to check/fill?

Cheers

Not easy to check or refill mate; boot liner and spare wheel pan out unfortunately, only takes 125cc of fluid in the system and as little as 25cc reservoir!!! I have a litre of the right fluid though so a lifetime's supply!

If it does it again I would suspect fluids, if it does not I would be inclined to think it is a temporary electronic glitch..!!

haha....cheers Newton :)

Ha. Yeah, I'm kind of that way of thinking, but really dont want to find myself on the outside lane of a motorway without drive!

I suspect its time to get it looked at by someone in the know, just to be safe.

Thanks for the help, chaps!

Does a simple reset clear codes? Thought they'd still be available for an SD to read

As far as I am aware, once you power off by the master switch and leave it for a while, it clears the ECU codes, but again I could be wrong..!!
