What a load of sexist, racist, homophobic tosh.
If it's election time I sometimes listen to LBC and the best presenter on there by a country mile imho is a bloke called Iain Dale who happens to be gay, he is there because of his ability not to make the numbers up like the BBC.

Some know me as a Hard Rock fan but I do like tuning into Classic FM when the mood takes me. Very relaxing and I particularly like listening around Christmas for those classics.

Very true. Pleasing background music

Used to have 2 on quite a lot in the car, seems to be just more and more dumbed down, but probably targeting a different generation. Car now just left tuned to Planet Rock.

Apple Music (or Spotify) rather than the radio for me, mostly. I can usually find a playlist that meets my music listening needs. Radio 4 or podcasts for spoken word.
It does seem that there's a generational shift going on at Radio 2, which I suppose is not surprising given there is an ever-wider range of "popular music" (that's too ancient for Radio 1's audience) for them to cover.

Must admit my R2 days have subsided. The wife’s clock radio means I have to endure the irritation that is Zoe Ball, god she is awful. I do still listen to Rylan on Saturdays him and especially his mum are funny.

I now listen to BBC Radio Solent, it’s a bit cheesy but ad free. Can’t listen to the other networks for this reason.

Agree with you on Zoe Ball and Rylan Matt. Apart from Classic FM I really do not listen to the radio much apart from Planet Rock.

Alright till they start playing The Sweet, after that I can't take them seriously anymore.

As a kid who grew up listening to John Peel after 9pm, 6Music is the perfect choice, throughout the day and into the evening.

All of this is rather interesting to me, from afar, because I think Brit radio in the 60s and 70s was the high water mark for that media...

We don't have a TV, so music is on all the time...unless we are asleep. Have the Sirius thing, and stream the iTunes through the Sonos, and have vinyl and CDs. But just about all terrestrial radio here is AWFUL...at least in this market, with the exception of this zany community college station without any real format...

I tried Greatest Hits on the way home last night, it turned out to be Simon Mayo's programme. I've not listened to commercial radio for ages but I realised I'd driven half way home, so 10-15mins, and he'd only spoken about 3 sentences the rest was ads, trailers and recorded bumph. Must be a good gig to have as their actual input in comparison with R2 must be much less.
Not convinced by the ads so turned proper old git and found radio 4.

There is a premium offering as well for some of them, which is ad free. Of course there's a cost....

Don’t suppose You’ll be listening to my show then?

I’ve been called lots of things in the past but never sexist racist or homophobic. I employed several hundred people prior to selling my business and semi-retiring, and they included many races, genders and several who identified as LBGTQ+. The only criteria I hired on was merit.

That’s what drives my radio station recruitment strategy, as the more popular the presenter and their choice of music, the greater the verified listener numbers and thus the more advertising revenue we tend to generate. What’s wrong with that approach?

You belittled people’s achievements because of their sexual orientation, gender and race, that is plain wrong. One of those was Zoe Ball who has the highest listener numbers of any radio show but you said she was just there to make up a quota, that doesn’t exactly tie in with your last paragraph.

I questioned the BBC hiring criteria and speculated that it was based on other factors as opposed to being solely based on merit, as I think it should be, regardless of their gender, race or sexual orientation. That should be the case for any role in any organisation.

The Radio 2 breakfast show has traditionally had the highest listener numbers of any U.K. radio show, so im not disputing what you state. What is a more relevant measurement IMO are her average audience numbers compared to her predecessors and whether she has grown her market share or shrunk it. Compared to Evans in that slot, it’s the latter. Time will tell once the Wright and Bruce replacements get into their stride.
