Ghibli II

Hi all,

I found your great site via Pistonheads. As I'm considering buying my very first Maserati, this seems like a very good place for some advice.

I'm seriously tempted to replace my Lotus Elise with a Maserati Ghibli II. The Elise just doesn't get used enough, with the kids getting bigger... I think a Ghibli would be the ideal replacement. What should I look out for? Were there a lot of differences through the years? 2.0 or 2.8? And are they as expensive to run as I fear?

Thanks in advance

Hi Futse....nice to see you post.

I am not experienced in the 90's cars, but there are a few guys on the forum who are and will offer some advice.

The main advice we all offer though...is get an independent inspection by an independent specialist...can savea fortune!

I think we have one Ghibli owner...will check and post his name...maybe best to then pm him

Welcome Futse...hats off to you for considering the Ghibli. I really do like the 90's Maserati's - I too would love to get one as a second car but I waste enough money on having just the one so that rules out a second car!

It'll be a very different drive to Elise and just as unique in it's own way I imagine...keep us updated on your searching and hopefully buying experiences, in particular the condition if the cars you hopefully go and see!

Hi Bram

With regard to running costs a Ghibli will set you back £400/650 for an annual service, Belt/major will be around 650/900 and the big timing chain service every 56000 miles is around £2000/2500 these are based on indie/main steeler prices.

Parts are like all maserati's on the high side I would say they cost the same as a big Merc or BM to maintain. Buy the best you can find, pay a little more to save money in the long run.

Main weak points are radiators, exhaust manifolds warp and leak (engine out to put right) rust is the biggest problem but the later cars suffer less.

An inspection will be your safest way to purchase a car. Andy Haywood and Paul Molanue at Bill McGrath’s are the best guys to talk to.

If you need anymore info pm me I'll pm you my phone no and give me a call.

Hello.
My first post. I have owned a Ghibli
Cup for ten years and have had few problems that were not self inflicted.Parts are becoming harder to track down and do not accept the first price. My local dealer quoted me the best part of £500 for a headlight and sourced one for half that.
I once considered a Lotus but ended up with 147 GTA.
The ghibli would be great fun but as a second car.
Good luck with your search

Thank you guys.
The car passed it's MOT last month but is off to JCT Brooklands in the week for a cam belt change. Hmmm.
Read with some interest the value that some willing purchasers think they should pay. I would not even consider selling it anywhere near the 17-18k mark.
Will upload some pictures soon as my iPhone does not seem to do this trick.
Hope to get to Stanford Hall though hope the weather is not like today's.
