gear selection when stopped

when I got the car I was told to better leave in 'N' as this will reduce clutch wear. however when I look at the manual it says to turn the car off keeping it still in gear and not 'N'

I noticed the car would then beep at you if you swith it off in 'N' - almost saying have you not read the manual - oh you must be a bloke

when you go to start the car, its in 1st, select 'N' and start car

is this right ? which way ??

I want to make the clutch last as long as poss... 20% wear at the moment

I think this is correct Enzo...
On my QP, even if I put the car in Neutral, when I switch off the engine it automatically goes into 1st gear...
Then when I go to start, it is already in 1st, I move to neutral and start...

It probably tells you to switch off while in gear because the handbrake is cr4p.

EnzoMC, when parking, leave the car in gear. This'll stop the beeping, protect the handbrake (which is cr@p) and stop your pride and joy rolling into a tree if you park on a hill. When you come to start the car, foot on brake and it'll select neutral as you turn the ignition. Simples. :D

Manual does indeed instruct one to leave the car in gear when switching off and the computer will beep at you if you are in neutral when the ignition is switched off. However when driving about but having to come to a stop for things like traffic lights, the consensus is that it is best to put the car in to N to save on clutch wear. The clutch is clearly not wearing if you have switched the ignition off in 1st, so this is worth doing because despite the handbrake being always adjusted during servicing, it is very rubbish indeed and I would not trust it to hold the car on anything other than completely flat roads.

Enzo no2 , sitting at junctions and or the lights its perfectly fine to sit and wait with the car in gear and Your foot on the brake, this operates a switch which disconnects any clutch slip , moment you release your foot off the brake the clutch is then ready to engage the flywheel and is hence slipping , quicker you then apply some positive gas the better for the clutch,

Personally , and maybe ive been lucky neither of my cars suffer from a poor handbrake , both are cleaned , maintained and adjusted by myself at least every 6 months , they are as far as im concerned fit for purpose but they do easily go out of adjustmnent, so use your logic and take precautions as you feel are required , dont leave it on for long extended periods as others have said use chocs when left for longish periods

Re the paranoia regarding clutch wear , dont read into this too much , the electonic wear check is only a rough guide and commonly known to be up to 30% out

Not wanting to spout about my personal experiences on this Frank , but as you know , the readings are only as good as the last person who reset or adjusted the settings, if they weren't correctly reset, then any further reading is totally futile or wholly inaccurate , if one is really concerned re clutch wear , then there are symptoms which start to occur when your approaching the last or remaining material on the clutch plate itself , obviously slippage , burning smell when booting it dropping out of gear when changing down, and gear selector light flashing on and off etc , personally i would just drive it as you feel fit and enjoy it , when those symptoms start then get a new clutch in
