Get the diesel version !
The XJ is a magnificent car and stands head and shoulders above an XF

100% agree on that. I was given a diesel XF while my XE was being serviced and it’s in a different class to the XE and XF. Looks aren’t for everyone but to be it has loads of presence and they are a lot of car for the money these days.

We’re back in the TV room at the old people’s home again. ;)

I thought this was an old people's home

Given the way luxury and performance cars can suck money out of your wallet there's a lot to be said for a manufacturers warranty , though I'd probably pick a car that already has a full lexus history so you don't get a big bill the first time they service it

I do fancy one of these. Perhaps more than a Maser.

A 550i 5 series Bmw, cheap, fast and a lovely place to be, if you can handle those Bangle looks (which, in retrospect, with the newer "beaver teeth" bimmers, don't look so bad)

I’ll stick in another vote for the XF…R. It’s laughably quick, but comfortable and refined when not hustling. My wife adores it, and the only other car she’s ever even tolerated is the Bentley GT Continental convertible, which I think speaks volumes about the XFR. She won’t let me get rid of it (ours is getting too old now I my opinion) - and this from a woman who didn’t even notice the difference between the Tuscan and Z4MC because “they’re both blue, how am I supposed to spot the difference?”.

I’d get a facelift though as the cam chain guides are beefed up (ask me how I know that’s a £5k problem on the pre-facelift!) and the UX is a bit better - the heated seats/chair conditioning get buttons post-2012 but are hidden on the touch screen pre.

On a motorway run at 80 you’ll get 28-29mpg. It’s only slowing down and speeding up that kills the economy because it weigh 75 tonnes. It’s silly smooth/wafty on the motorway too. But it hides its weight admirably enough on country roads - it’s actually a brilliant chassis in my opinion.

Even most car people don’t know it exists, or don’t know it’s a 510bhp 5.0 supercharged V8. I took all the sill badges off mine so it’s super subtle too.

Sadly, I'm going into bat for MAF; that grey Bentley looks great, goes very, very well and now it even sounds good. All in all, it's a pretty decent car and much nicer than the bucket of afterbirth you seem to be championing.

It’s just, well, grey.

We had an XFR which was much-loved by Mrs Crud. 'Twas a helluva wagon.
