I’m not bothered about Lewis, I get that you would be if you’re a fan of his. But an unfair sport is pointless. Was it fair or not?

It's not "fair" in the sense that the team let their driver down, RBR had tyre advantage throughout and were waiting for a restart to throw the race back their way. What caused the safety car restart was bad luck.

The race should have been resumed in a safe manner which it was and restarts are part of the sport.

Why do I watch the sport? My parents stuck me in front of the TV when the F1 was on for as long as I could remember. At this point its some kind of bizarre conditioning, I don't even enjoy it!

Fairness isn’t about Merc letting Lewis down. I’m asking about the implementation of the rules by FIA, it didn’t seem fair to me, but maybe it was. They said restart with back markers in between and then changed their minds. That made all the difference; that’s what struck me as unfair.

In F1 they always re-order the grid before a restart - it would have been a strange call if it happened as a race order grid but I am guessing they would have been forced into it if they ran out of time with cleaning up the crashed Williams.

Next year should be interesting, huge rule overhaul and tight budget gaps might bring the field closer together - no doubt there will still be a dominant team or two (maybe Ferrari and McLaren back in it as well)

The bit I can’t understand is,
Normally all the cars unlap themselves. Not just the ones inbetween.
And Merc had no choice. If they had gone in for tyres Max would have stayed out and had track position. Then Hamilton would have been where Max was.

Agreed, F1 winner for an exciting finish,
Loser for off track decision making.

I don't think this is over. Toto will punch someone and I can guess who will be on life support tonight...
I can’t see how they will reverse who has won the F1 title now. I also can’t see how anyone can see that very late change of decision to be fair.

They’d have done that if they’d known and pulled him in and had one lap to do him on fresh tyres, but when they had the chance to make that decision, they were told the back markers couldn’t pass so they stayed out, then the race directors change their mind and too late for Lewis, Max was always going to overtake having caught up under safety car. Hamilton couldn’t have made any decision to help him win, unless he had slyly crashed into him on the final lap, Schumacher style.

Whatever the ins and outs of the safety car / lapping business, Lewis blew it when he went wide with Max taking advantage in that split second, and Toto Wolfe was out of order screaming down the comms to the race director.

I guess there's been more stage managing by the Spams, anything for spectacle and sensationalism. I didn't watch it and, tbf, I didn't miss it. I expected some kind of controversy, but thought it would go Sham's way.

Weird watching sport when you don’t want either to win. Well done Max. Crazy sport spoiled by technicalities.
I’m actually a neutral in this (Lando/Kimi fan) but Verstappen’s win sets up an epic 2022. How does Hamilton come back from this? What effect will his young, hungry new teammate have? With the first win under his belt, will Verstappen elevate to a new level?

Regarding the FIA, the BTCC adds laps to those spent behind the safety car. Similar things happen in NASCAR. Why doesn’t the same thing happen in F1?
