Hi,

Strange thing happened in my car today, gear indicator screen started continually flashing.

Switched off/on again all fine.

Any idea what this indicates..... Anything to worry about?

Thanks

Pete

Not wanting to worry you Pete , what Frank says is right , there are a couple of things that can cause this with varying degrees of anxiety , it doesn't go away , it will return , its clutch/FI pump related could be as simple as the F1 pump hydraulic oil level below par, could be F1 pump or relay on the way out , or could be as severe as the clutch is approaching a worn level , i have had this for over a year now but only in 6th gear travelling at speed for atleast 10 mins, if i flick down to 5th and back into 6th it dissappears and the light goes solid for another 10 mins then comes back flashing , ive learned to live with it now untill the clutch gets sorted as mine is well over due now , its part of the problem

Im sure Meridian will agree with the above , just note that my clutch was diagnosed by Dick Lovets swindon oct 2010 at 100% worn at 31K miles now i have done 46K miles and it still drives fine apart from the flashing 6th gear and the odd slip if i go crazy at the lights

Its the Beemer/audi syndrome in me Lads , everynow and again you get that boy racer , you know the type , creeps up your *** looking to read what it says on the bumper ................ expecting to see Jag ................. but then the masser hips are playing tricks with there eyes and suddenly they spy Maserati and thats like red rag to a bull , they want some .................so 99% of the time im adult about things and resist , but im human guys .... yes me ..... the Loz is just a mere mortal so i give in occasionally , **** mary **** mary **** mary sorry Lord ......... but yes i weaken and give them a **** good run for their money untill they are well and truly aware which car is the master ............. then go home and lash myself on the back ooooooooh at least 50 times pennance paid

Hi Pete, all the above is pertinent, but to add further info....

When your clutch is getting towards the end of it's life, the wear reading becomes unreliable. The margin of error is just too great..... could be 50 percent, 70 percent, even 90 percent worn, but the wear reading will not measure this with any certainty. What does happen with a gradual but increasing regularity is the flashing gear indicator, which indicates gear not properly selected. This is indicating a slight slippage during engagement. Little known, but the SD reads slippage, and as the clutch reaches the end of its life, this is the more reliable guide to the state of play. I can't remember the numbers, but there's a bench-mark built into the SD and the reading measures the variance to this benchmark. Easily checked on an SD and the wear reading, in conjunction with the slippage reading will guide you to a real understanding of where your clutch is at.

Hope this helps..... Cheers, Em.
