Few newbie questions for Gransport

Had a good search on forum but still have a couple of newbie questions...
1. What tyre brand do people tend to go for during summer?
2. Same as above but for winter (it’ll be a daily driver)
3. When storing outside what is the recommended car cover to use
4. Do you lift off the loud pedal when upshifting? Do you lift off fully?
5. I once read that in manual mode the clutch life is extended as opposed to auto?
6. In manual mode if you don’t downshift what happens when revs are
Very low? Does it auto downshift to prevent stall?
7. When waiting at lights do you downshift to neutral? Might sound retarded but I’ve never driven a robotised manual (is that what it’s even called)?
8. Are they fussy on 95/98ron fuel?
9. X pipe/H pipe...tried to YouTube but didn’t find much, generally what are the differences in sounds? Does anyone have any cool pics of swaps they’ve had done?
10. The carbon lip and or rear spoiler from the MC victory, was or is it available as an aftermarket to fit regular GS’s

That’s it for now!

Thanks in advance and sorry if these are basic questions

1. Some like the Michelin Pilot Supersport (I do) some the Goodyear Eagle.

2. Personally i’ve never had winters on mine but I have heard good things about the Pirelli Sottozero.

3. You want something breathable

4. Yes when not pressing on. When flat out just keep your foot in.

5. A lot of ppl have said this, but most drive in manual sport all of the time as this is clearly better. The clutch starts to engage at 1200 rpm when pulling away and is fully engaged by 1800 so just don’t clog it half way through this process. If you floor it when pulling away it will automatically dial in a lot of revs and dump the clutch.

6. Yes, it downshifts on its own. It doesn’t upshift automatically so you do hit the limiter in manual.

7. Yes, if there is a bit of drag in the clutch being in neutral stops it wearing.

8. Not in my experience. But for the love of god don’t start that discussion on here again

9. X pipe will generally just increase the volume from standard and is higher pitched. H pipe will give more bass and a dirtier sound, more like an American V8.

10. Some cars were supplied with the carbon spoiler as an option. STD is a body colour. Not sure there are any available aftermarket. There was a group buy several years ago which was for carbon spoilers.

1. What tyre brand do people tend to go for during summer?
I went for Pilot SuperSports & very impressed & heartily recommend. PZero's were rubbish in comparison.
2. Same as above but for winter (it’ll be a daily driver)
Don't drive it in the rain or winter so can't comment.
3. When storing outside what is the recommended car cover to use
Stored in garage under OEM soft cover so can't comment on that either.
4. Do you lift off the loud pedal when upshifting? Do you lift off fully?
At full tilt...no...at less than 5k or lower throttle input..yes.
5. I once read that in manual mode the clutch life is extended as opposed to auto?
Never use auto...always use manual.
6. In manual mode if you don’t downshift what happens when revs are
Very low? Does it auto downshift to prevent stall?
Doesn't stall box will just changed down gears one by one into 1st.
7. When waiting at lights do you downshift to neutral? Might sound retarded but I’ve never driven a robotised manual (is that what it’s even called)?
Sometimes yes if longer at lights.. mainly no...foot on brake although my late car has hill hold so it won't move anyway.
8. Are they fussy on 95/98ron fuel?
Always put the best in mine every time.
9. X pipe/H pipe...tried to YouTube but didn’t find much, generally what are the differences in sounds? Does anyone have any cool pics of swaps they’ve had done?
I have secondary cat delete with straight through pipes and rear boxes delete with straight pipes....sounds pretty good to me!

I have a 2007 facelift 4200 so not GS but same thing

That’s it for now!

Thanks for the info guys
R.e exhausts I guess a lot have been modded...is there generally a pro or con to whether do go x pipe or h? Living in a quietist village might rule out H pipe but if X pipe sounds more like a 360 then I’ll go for it!

Also on the subject of that, read a few differing opinions of what the majority of the engine is, one guy saying it’s basically a 430 engine....?!?

So how much architecture is actually shared with a production Ferrari? Or was it a one off project done by Ferrari purely for the 4200/GS?

X is more controllable noise wise as you have to rev it to make it scream.

Engine, all made in the same factory from the same castings. Differences are some head intervals, 4200 has a single intake with one throttle body, the Fez has twin and the cranks, one is cross plain the other straight. In essence they are the same unit.

Because the engine has a cross plane crankshaft and the Fezza has a flat plane the timing of the "bangs" is different and so a GS will never sound like a 430. Which in my personal opinion is a good thing - the GS sounds better in my view with an X or a H.

The GS V8 is a variant of the F136 engine range which was is fitted to the 4200, GS, QP IV, GT, GTS. It is also in the Alfa 8C and the Ferrari 430, California and 458. It even made it into an A1 GP race car giving 600 bhp. There are some major differences though. The crank is different as mentioned above, the Maser camshaft timing system is chain driven (better!) as opposed to belts in a Fezza.

with you on the noise. Never liked the 360 or 430 noise. The 430 was better but when I lent my brother in laws 360 for the weekend that high pitch noise just didn't move me. GS sounds much better.

Most dealers will sell the car with standard exhaust as noisy ones limit the audience...so keep an eye out in the classified section for used ones.

Re a cover - if you are using the car daily you are likely to cause more damage to the paint putting it on and off each day.
I don't bother coasting dropping into N at the lights...I believe its just old wifes tales re it saving wear and I get c1000 miles per 1% of wear in the three I had had.

1. Goodyear Eagle F1 or better

2. Mine is in a partial slumber during the salty road months

3. As others have said don't bother with an outdoor cover especially if you are going to daily it you will ruin the paint. If you havent already get into good car wash habbits for example using "2 bucket system" and protect your paint by building up layers of wax. I like to use synthetic sealant as a base layer and carnuba wax on top...

4,5,6,7. Will let others answer as I have a three pedal manual 4200

8. Agree with zep lets not start this one again lol.

9. X pipe gets louder as the revs build up while h pipe is louder lower down in the rev range yet does not get incrementally louder as the revs build in the same way as the x.

10. I'm sure that I saw imitations of the spoiler on eBay from china made from black ABS plastic. Get it carbon wrapped or hydrodipped and you are sorted at a fraction of the cost of the carbon one.

Is there a thread where forumers have uploaded before and after vids of exhaust upgrades?

Winter tyres, I had Continentals on the Spyder and they certainly felt good, Newton now has them for use on his Coupe during winter months.
