Ferrari Roma - Test Drive

Not that I’m in the position but I keep returning to a conundrum - a new Roma for £200k+ with options, or a Ferrari 599 HGTE/612 Scaglietti OTO for around half the price. Not quite like with like - the Roma is likely to be financed more, and you get a warranty - but it’s not as if the older cars are slow, they have naturally aspirated V12s and are modern enough to have the tech you need rather than superfluous stuff. The Roma is prettier, but both the 599 and 612 have a similar elegance to them (compared to the brutal designs at Ferrari over the past ten years). It’s a tricky one, as I really love the Roma’s design, but the Nat/asp V12 is such a thing...
599.

Finally found time to watch Harry's video on this and as beautiful as it is, I wouldn't swap my Strad for it. It certainly does not sound anywhere near as nice, it is not naturally aspirated, the tech would really annoy (touch screens solve a problem nobody needed fixing), he proves that 600bhp is too much for road use in the UK (I never get out of my Strad and wish it had more than 460bhp) and I bet they won't build one for less than 200k, which is poor value. If I wanted to spend that on a Ferrari, I would prefer an FF or 599, keep the Strad and a new Alpine for the same money!
I do agree with his comments on Michelins vs Pirellis though..... I will get my coat.

i think we are violently agreeing!
Would be nice :)

They seem to be a bloody stupid idea when you're being juggled around due to road surface. Having said that I experienced a Kenwood one today. That (at least for an hour) seemed 'OK'

.....time will tell if that perception remains.

Voice control is where we should be

what was wrong with nice sensibly sized rotating knobs and sliders! Land Rover are ruining their latest cars with these screens! not intuitive on the move, can't be used with gloves, smeary in no time. no value apart from aesthetics in a brochure or showroom from my perspective.

Yep. Lack of haptic feedback.

While I hate touch screen infotainment systems, as I agree they solve a problem no one ever had, I actually now realise, that I detest my wife's 2018 c class Merc coupe switchgear. It has pretty much every option on it so every button blank has something in it.. Even after nearly 3 years I curse and rage trying to find the traditional buttons which appear to have been positioned by an idiot who either sits right on top of the steering wheel or has ape like long arms .. It feels like there are endless buttons to jab blindly at ranging from a line of identical horizontal switches above the cubby hole.. a rotary dial surrounded by buttons, a mouse like joystick covered in buttons and a touchpad... all of which have icons that disappear in sunlight against the shiny piano black finish... it is just awful to use... and the voice control is poor compared to the one in the FCA Uconnect.... just realised this should probably be in the rant thread..

I can understand the logic of having a sat nav screen / audio display screen in a car.

What i dont get is the need to put hvac heated seats and all the other accessories in there that you have to adjust with a touch pad, pointer or screen input that makes you take your eyes off the road in order to make a simple adjustment.

We ban mobile phone use except for hands free because people were holding their phones and taking their eyes off the road and causing accidents. Then the car manufacturers decide lets put a screen in instead where you have to look at it press a few virtual or real buttons and take your eyes off the road. Not really a safety feature in modern cars.

Stupid idea. I much prefer a dial or a button where you know exactly where it is and adjust without taking your eyes off the road.

I have to say I like the Velars touchscreen in both looks and function. It did take some days to figure it all out but once you have it’s very simple to use......on the move. I agree re the fingerprints that are left on the black screen once switched off but that’s easily taken care of with the provided microfibre if you’re particularly fussed.
I never sit in the car with it switched off so barely notice.

They dont really bode well for future classic cars either. Try getting a CRT tv repaired now. You can just imagine in 20 years time trying to get the screen repaired on what will then be a classic jag , merc ferrari as the screens will have died along with replacement screen panels.

The infotainment screen in the ghibli is very well thought out and easy to use. Things like heater controls are duplicated so you have conventional buttons underneath or the screen if you so choose

Duplicated buttons are fine. When you get something like a Tesla which are pretty much physical button free then it has to be a safety issue.

In my previous XJ (350 model) you had a button to turn on the heated seats, even Mrs Scaf could do it, first generation of the new shape (351) and it was all touch screen and you had to make far more presses to operate, latest XJ, joy oh joy a real button again, but it works as a shortcut to the touch screen, so better but not best.
Bring back buttons, knobs and dials

Only have a touchscreen in the RR which mainly is used for sound & sat nav both otherwise buttons for everything which is my preference.
