External temperature sensor

Hi guys

Sorry if this has been covered before - I've searched and can find references to it but not an exact answer so I was wondering if mine is 'normal' or not (now there's a question ha ha!!)

Anyway, the external temperature reading on my dashboard (which I believe is taken from a sensor found under one of the wing mirrors) has always been somewhat wayward - 56 degrees on some warm days when I know for a fact it's barely 30 - and 1-2 degrees on chillier days when I know it's really about 15. Also, yesterday I was driving in what was probably 20 degrees when it dropped to 6 then went back up to 15 then back down to 8 all in the space of a couple of minutes.

Whilst I accept this is not the actual temperature, is this an experience familiar to anyone else, i.e. is it normal behaviour for a Maser external temperature gauge in which case I'll ignore it!!

Given it's fluctuating rather than simply 'not working' I would think a fuse or loose connection is not the problem as surely it'd be either on or off in that case?

If not and it needs replacing, I've tried in vain to find the part on Eurospares so if anyone could point me in the right direction it'd be most appreciated!! :as002:

Cheers

Gary

OK well I've found the sensor from Eurospares at a massive 9.83 so will order one of those as it's cheap enough not to worry about!

I'd still like to know if the temp fluctuations are 'normal' though!!

Whereabouts are you based? Do you drive from the tip of Norway to southern Spain a lot!
I never get that variation. When I get in the car it shows a really high reading but then settle downs after some air is passed over it. It never shows too cold initially.

Ha ha!! Nope, not there but in Queensland so I can accept we do have some warm days (Late 30's/early 40's) but certainly not in the figures I see. Also the cold ones make no sense either so it's all a little bit haphazard. I'm led to believe this sensor can have 'an effect' on how the climate control works so was just thinking of getting it sorted now, in our winter, before the hot days return...

Gary, never had it in the Maser. Had it in my Alfa 156 when the sensor was on the way out (and that screwed the AC), which I think we covered in the other place?

Thanks for the reply and I guess it's probably another of the 'shared' items of equipment from Alfa so maybe that would explain the symptoms being similar to your Alfa one?

Got a service coming up in a few weeks so I'll get one in for that and it can be done whilst it's in and see if that settles the temp reading down....if not, well gotta love Italian electrics!!!!

Italians electrics are fine :)
The 4200 mirror is the 166 mirror, I understand. And the sensors are identical :)

I get this, yesterday an example I was getting the beep..beep..beep and a snow flake on the dash, what -10c, didn't think the aircon was that good.

I hadn't really looked into this until I saw this, are they easy to replace ? and is this on the drivers side.

do we have part number ?

Doesn't seem to be on the parts list.

Hi there

Not sure the ease of replacement but the part number from Eurospares is 980000961 and should read Driver Side Outer Temperature sensor at 9.83GBP I think??

Door card off, then the cables come through the mirror and into a multiplug. The mirror is pretty easy to remove, with a large nut type fixing. No idea where to go from there, though....

Meh. 'It's just a car'. Seriously, it's easier than many of the cars I've worked on because it's built to a standard as opposed to down to a budget. The door card removal is a breeze. Proper set screws, not silly little plastic pegs which have gone brittle over the last 10 years and therefore shatter the first time you try to dismantle anything :)

From Wikipedia:

Meh is an interjection, often used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It can also be used as an adjective (meaning mediocre, boring, or apathetic)

Dissing, basically ;)

Thanks. So, basically a meaningless word. I'll still not be using it then.
