Electric Cars

This has always been my view hence why we tend to buy older cars but the so called eco warriors don't seem to agree.

Eco warriors are generally people who believe everything they’re told and aren’t capable of independent thinking. They’re either stupid, indoctrinated by their education and choice of media, or have wholly unattainable wishes for the how the world should be.

I’ve long said to people that I have a business which is wonderful for the environment. Petrols, no diesels, no new cars, they already exist. Avoidance of manufacture or scrappage is great for the planet. Unsurprisingly, plenty of them give a smug sneer as they ‘can’t be bothered arguing’. Fact is, they have no argument and have made themselves look obtuse.

Remember, driving a V8 petrol is far better for the environment than any new purchase.

Like folk on Grand Designs building ‘an eco house’; firstly, pour 1000m3 of concrete into the ground’.....

I feel a screenplay coming on, 'The Children of Clarkson'.

No new cars have been manufactured for 28 years and the newest car is a 2019 Ford Focus (this is set in the future) but Clarkson just crashed it and was killed and there is a public outpouring of satisfaction.

However, Catmanv2 and Newton have secretly built a new supercar, called the MaserTron 6000 using a 3D printer and bored-out BiTurbo engine. Runs on pure Stella Artois, but the eco-police are onto them, and they seek to impound the vehicle, and recover the tax due on it.

All the petrol heads have been incarcerated on the IoW, but lurking just outside British Waters is a supertanker full of 5-Star (the petrol not the group), meanwhile tensions mount as all over the UK as hidden sports cars from all generations have been mating to produce new sports cars, and they need petrol and they are goddam gonna get some.

They enlist the help of a maverick bunch of car freaks, hiding out in the Bolton underground, Messers McGuinness, Flintoff and some Southerner, to capture the tanker and fuel 'em up.

Need an ending. And a beginning. The middle bit could do with some work too....

Have you been drinking copious amounts of your special fuel?

Fool! :lol2:

No car of ours will run on Stella! ;)

just read on motoring research that as of July 1st all new ev's must legally have an external sounder that varies in pitch according to speed up to 13mph, acoustic vehicle alert system AVAS, I vote for the jaws theme

I feel Thomas the tank tune should be compulsory for them all!

A few truths about EVs:

Charging: Currently only 28% of UK power is generated by renewable sources which means that 72% of the power that is used to charge the batteries comes from coal or nuclear power stations. Most EV owners charge their cars overnight but, given that solar power, which represents about 4%, is not available at night, the percentage of green power drops to 24%. Obviously this will improve over time with the UK’s ambition to cut greenhouse gases by 80% by 2050 – but that’s a long way off.
There's a few errors in your facts.
We use gas too

In 2011 the percentage of electricity supply derived from primary energy sources was as follows:
In May 2016, for the first time solar power produced more electricity than coal, producing 1.33TWh over the month compared to 0.9TWh from coal. On 21 April 2017, for the first time since the 19th century, the UK had a 24-hour period without any generation from coal power. As of 2018, the use of coal power is decreasing to historic lows not seen since before the Industrial Revolution. Coal supplied 5.4% of UK electricity in 2018, down from 7% in 2017, 9% in 2016, 23% in 2015 and 30% in 2014.
And we should not forget this story.

Oh and I'm not against or pro EV, but they do have their advantages over diesels where I work. Short journeys etc.

Anyway was asking Mrs MLC how they charge the batteries for Formula E, and it's not far from the picture above!

Midlifecrisis. Good spot. My comment that 72% of power comes from coal and nuclear should have included natural gas. And yes, we’ve been having some coal free periods recently, by all reports, although that has been down to recent warm periods. The UK still has 5 active coal power stations and coal still contributed 5% of our power in the first half of 2019. Having said that, I acknowledge that electricity production is heading in the right direction and I’m not fundamentally pro or anti any particular way forward - just let’s not let another diesel fiasco happen, where the public are fooled into thinking a particular technology is green, when in fact it’s far from it.

My observations, which may be naive (everyone please correct me) are that current battery production/charging/disposal is significantly less green than petrol but that we are blindly heading down this route.

And surely this can’t be right for the planet or humanity:

Cobalt:

Lithium

Batteries will become more efficient, recycling will improve and energy production will become greener but the industry is mostly owned by the Chinese so we can’t impose European standard human rights values. How do you improve that? The emphasis will be on cost reduction.

I remember when I was living in Copenhagen my flatmate told me a while back Denmark went all around it was running on pure wind and tidal power (no idea if that was true) until a total calm period of weather arrived and they had to buy traditional energy from local neighbours/bitter rivals Sweden. At 2 or 3x the price....
