It probably due to people stating this fact in court..and getting away with it.

About time they did this. Although their SORN document and online tax application system is very good and could not be made easier.

The argument for a road fund cash cow is made even thinner by this process....

The tax disk was always in place and argued by successful ministers of transport as an annual check that you had an MOT and insurance, this worked for traffic wardens, bobies on the beat as well as traffic rats. The national database now maintains up to dat info regarding MOT, insurance and tax, ANPR enforces this on every major road and many other places besides. Most patrol cars and unmarked are now ANPR equiped so there is no need for annual road tax. Realistically absorbing it into fuel duty will hurt innitially but it will cut down dramatically on administration!

Now what do we do about all the unisured, MOT'd or tax paying Eastern European motors outstaying their alloted time, avoiding fines and in a darn right dangerous condition???

To be fair to the Gov't, they got their priorities right. if you're caught without tax or mot, it's just a simple fine, no points or real punishment. if a car is noticeably not roadworthy, the police can have it taken off the road. Where they play the game right is when a driver has no insurance, - minimum 6 points and a fine. This is critical as you just never know what could happen and being uninsured and involved in an accident can ruin lives.

I also like our relaxed approach to annual MOT testing. We can do a lot of things here many countries have outlawed. Like fitting nitrous :) it's road legal, and rightly so. I'm curious to know actually, when you guys get your maseratis MOT'd, do they do a brake test? Because they shouldn't!! Cars fitted with a limited slip differential can be damaged on brake test machines so all your cars should be exempt from brake tests come MOT time.

My mot station take it for a test drive with a little gizmo on the dashboard which tells them that the brakes are fine.

All MOT stations have a swing device they place on the floor of the passenger well and use on a road test; mine is happy to jump in as a passenger whilst I do the road test for him! I've not had any problem as it swings out at rightangle!!!!

Last week I went to the Post Office to tax my Hawk for the year. The chap refused to renew my tax as the system had informed him that the car didn't have a valid MOT. Even though I had it with me. So, I phoned the MOT station to check and they confirmed that they had typed my MOT certificate number into their terminal and everything was OK.

I toddled off back to the same post office. Once again, the guy told me that the certificate was no recognised by the Government computer and that I couldn't have a new tax disk.

So, I went home, logged onto the Road Tax website and renewed online using my MOT certificate number. No problem whatsoever.

I recently did loads of taxing and number changes at my local DVLA office and did not have any problems with any of the paperwork, even though my insurance certificates were all internet produced and printed off. They can easily check on the system within seconds anyway. I suppose Post Offices are different. We had the 3200 tested and they road tested the brakes, as they said it can not go on a rolling road tester..... MUST BE TOO FAST FOR THE ROLLING ROAD...????
