Dual Boot Linux Win7

I thought I'd ask, as I'd probably get a more straightforward answer here.

(Background: I'm compiling binaries for ESP32 for micropython. It's tortuous enough, but achieved a standard build, using WSL [Windows Subsystem for Linux, with Debian], only to discover that WSL can't access USB to squirt the binary. I've done that by porting to windows or a crappy raspberry and using esptools. However it's not possible for a non-standard build where the build includes deploy. The non-standard build is only one step to then develop the board)
I'm not really interested in Linux (I'm OK using it), nor ab initio C or whatever builds. I'm just wanting to build one or two micropython ESP32 images to use it there. Something I've been content doing for a while.
I've dual booted Windows and Linux before. It looks what used to be a simple repartition, of install Linux which pings a Grub in the MBR, has become unreliable. I've attempted Ubuntu, which seems to install but I get the dreaded GREP emergency load which fails to recognize any of the partitions. Used Easy BCD and boot repair, amended the boot to include Grub, or Grub2 but still bust.
Removed Linux partitions, and cleaned our MBR to revert to single Windows now.
I just need a Linux environment occasionally.
Can anyone recommend a Linux distribution that is straightforward since I'm getting frustrated headbanging solving problems that are several orders away from the objective.

The machine isn't anything peculiar, I3, SSD's, SATA AHC1

I always used to use Mint. Any reason you can't run a live linux (which mint is, but can also be installed) to access it and drop to USB?

Why bother dual booting if you use occasionally. Will not running under Virtualbox do what you need?

Σκέφτηκα να ρωτήσω, καθώς πιθανότατα θα έχω μια πιο απλή απάντηση εδώ.

Δεν με ενδιαφέρει πραγματικά το Linux (δεν το χρησιμοποιώ), ούτε το ab initio C ή οτιδήποτε άλλο δημιουργεί. Θέλω απλώς να δημιουργήσω μία ή δύο εικόνες μικροπυθών ESP32 για να τις χρησιμοποιήσω εκεί. Κάτι που ήμουν ικανοποιημένος για λίγο.
Έχω κάνει διπλή εκκίνηση Windows και Linux στο παρελθόν. Φαίνεται ότι ήταν μια απλή ανακατανομή, της εγκατάστασης Linux που κάνει ping ένα Grub στο MBR, έχει γίνει αναξιόπιστη. Προσπάθησα το Ubuntu, το οποίο φαίνεται να εγκαθίσταται, αλλά έχω το φοβερό φορτίο έκτακτης ανάγκης GREP που δεν αναγνωρίζει κανένα από τα διαμερίσματα. Χρησιμοποίησε το Easy BCD και την επισκευή εκκίνησης, τροποποίησε την εκκίνηση ώστε να συμπεριλάβει το Grub ή το Grub2 αλλά εξακολουθεί να είναι προτομή.
Καταργήσαμε τα διαμερίσματα Linux και καθαρίσαμε το MBR μας για να επανέλθουμε σε μεμονωμένα Windows τώρα.
Χρειάζομαι περιστασιακά ένα περιβάλλον Linux.
Μπορεί κανείς να προτείνει μια διανομή Linux που να είναι απλή, γιατί απογοητεύομαι με την επίλυση προβλημάτων που απέχουν αρκετά από τον στόχο.

Το μηχάνημα δεν είναι τίποτα περίεργο, I3, SSD, SATA AHC1

Hate Linux and all it's multiple derivatives!!

I'm AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Irix, and Tru64/Ultrix in that order. Hardware and software by same company, one throat to choke.....

OpenVMS trumps them all though, especially on Alpha..

I remember when Linux first came out. It took my mate 2 weeks to download the 50 odd 3.5 floppies. Dual boot so win-win. 1 day to install and setup Linux (xfree anyone) and then went to install Windows 95. And it overwrote Linux. Learnt the hard way to install Windows first. Happy days.....

Oh yes. I recall spending two days to get xfree working with a mouse on Debian. OTOH I also recall spending the best part of a day installing a serial card in a 286 so I could play Lemmings with a mouse. So it's hardly only Linux. Most of the Linux stuff I've installed recently has been quick and easy

It's all too loose. There's often 15 ways of doing something simple.
