As I alluded to earlier I'm not knowledgeable about polishing machines, I'm sure others can help Rob.

Newton,
I have a rotary, but I need new pads to polish off, any suggestions / recommendations. I have used a muslin cloth over a buffing pad, but it tends to get clogged quite quickly, so a speciaiity pad would maybe be better..??
Cheers
R

Rob what do you need the pads for? polish off do you mean taking the polish off after using the rotary?

I would suggest a rotary - get a demo panel from the scrap yard, watch lots of Utube videos and experiment - I got a DA and soon switched to a rotary after 3 month to get better results (DA hardly gets used now), as I was going to work on customer cars I went to 3 different companies for advanced training (all had different approach to machine polishing but all suggested rotary) its not as bad or dangerous as people think
regards pads and compounds, I would suggest 3M or Menzerna compounds but get samples as what may work from someone may not work for you and will also depend on your pads.

I think Frank has already offered his services and I would also be happy to be backup help

Actually, someone else said the same. I didn't want to spend money on something I hardly use

I was planning to use the pads to polish off, saves a bit of elbow grease, but the pads have to be good. My bodyshop guy uses a rotary and get's amazing results.

get a rotary and only if you use it once or twice a year you will get way better results than a DA, just keep the rotary moving slowly across the panel and check the panel heat, if its getting hot then your staying in one location to long or pressing to hard, if the compound is not braking down than your moving too fast and not working it.

I could go on.....

I would be glad pop over to show you the process but don't think your local to me

Guys I have a Festool rotex 150 that I use as a timber sander. I recall there were all sorts of pads and accessories available to be purchased and I wonder whether this machine could be used as a car polisher?
Has anybody used one? If they do work, I would certainly be interested in having a go on one of our work vehicles before attemting the Maser

hi George

quick research and found this site with some interesting details, I did also find some others sites that did not rate this as its max was only 660rpm, you want to be around 900-1200rpm when the compound is almost broken down (start slow, speed up as compound breaks down and then bring the speed down again to finish off)

http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/other-projects/1874-polishing-your-car-rotex-part-2-a.html

for bumpers / plastic parts this machine would be ideal, you don't want high speeds on plastic panel parts

one point I missed - when using any type of DA or rotary I'd recommended getting an idea on your paint thickness, unless you know the full history.

Checking mine again it's an Orbital, with I think a max speed of 3000 rpm. The higher speed is supposed to be great for final polish, or so they tell me..??
